I love these old warbirds but somehow I feel the owners won't be happy until all of them either crash or burn.

I mean there are so few of irreplacable flyable planes left. All it takes is one mistake and it is gone forever.

 

A ha! Hear ya on that ;)

 

Hopefully they will get those Spitfire's outta Burma...er uh Myanmar.

Most of the old warbirds flying today were at one point "gone forever". It's because of the blood sweat and tears (not to mention big $$) that have lovingly restored them to flying condition where they can once again soar the heavens. Aircraft that cannot be made air worthy should be displayed in a static source. My .02, if it has wings, get her in the air

I had the good fortune to see "Setimental Journey" when it visited our area a few years back. The airplane and crew were, to say the least, super cool. I will have to admit, I stood by to watch her take off just so I could stand in the prop wash and listen to four radial engines. What a thrill.

At some point we the airplane viewing public need to make our wishes known to the governments of the world that some number of these planes must be preserved.

That they cannot bargain the existence of the few remaining planes away to make useless political points.

Many planes have been destroyed for that reason.

Look at the F14 Tomcat. In order to prevent Iran from gettings spares for their F14s all the retired USN F14s have been destroyed.

 

Wikipedia's page lists some 39 planes on display in various museums and plane guards.

It also asserts that much equipment has been removed.

 

But AMARC is choked full of F-4 Phantoms, A4 Skyhawks, F111s, and other planes.

 

What a pity to know that at the end of WW2 the British dumped squadrons of Grumman F6F Hellcats over the fantails of their carriers rather than pay the US for them. With but 8 airworthy, 10 on display and 4 being restored there aren't any more. I was able to see 3 of them including one flyable and flown.

And fly they will. I have had two super rides in 17's. One was Sentimental Journey when she was in Albuquerque on the way to get new props in San Diego it was a long and hot ride but well worth the pain. Ridding on the floor was not the greatest. That was 25 years ago.

About 5 years ago I got to ride with my Father-in-law out or Hawthorn airport in a 17. He was a 26 mission pilot during WWII and it was amazing to see an 80 man move around that plane. He was invited, with me, to stand in the upper turret. When he climbed through the tunnel to the cockpit he was surprised to see a pretty blond copilot in the right seat. He said with a little twinkle that he wished he had a copilot that looked that good.... he was a charmer. It was wonderful to listen to him talk about the missions and the way they seemed to become a family in the air. We lost him 2 years ago.... I was glad I was with him on his last mission.

I have also had the pleasure of rides in a B-26s two different Mustangs and several other vintage birds. As a pilot and person we need to keep these birds in the air. If they are airworthy then they need to fly, it is why they are here. Yes we will lose some, as we will lose some pilots it is the natural way of things.

I lost both of my uncles in WWII; both were pilots, one over Tokyo in a bomber and one in Europe in a escort mission to Germany. Mom made me promise to learn to fly.... she was right.

If someone can tell me how to transfer a DDVD to a website, I'll share my last flight as a pilot on a tour of a B17. BlueJeans has the takeoff, and the tour end 2months later me coming home and landing the B17. (Actually it wasn't my turn in the seat, but the other guys knew it would be my last flight, and that BlueJeans was waiting for the landing, she had watched me take-off many times, but never a landing. I didn't realize till later, she had taped it, and it was my last tour. MT

I am fortunate to live near http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/

 

We are blessed to see them flying all manner of vintage aircraft around the area and, attend the airshow at Willow Run Airport every year.

 

The do offer rides in both a B-17G and a B-25.

I agree. At some point, even machines become static museum pieces just to preserve them for the future. Too many old planes, trains and automobiles have been destroyed to feed vanity and hobbies.

...nothing wrong with 'living' history - planes that are maintained and can still fly. There are a number of B-17's already 'static' as you put it.

The Liberty Belle would've survived her accident had the fire fighters gotten their trucks out into the field that she landed in. they refused to take them out there citing that the field was too soft, irreguardless f the fact that a heavy B-17 was sitting there not really sunk in :angry::blush:

I was lucky enough to see "Sally B" taxi under her own power. They couldn't take off as they only had 3 of 4 engines working.

I did get close enough to have my had blown off partially, it got caught by the stampede strings.

 

Also saw "Mary Alice". I guess you can tell I got to Duxford.

Liberty Belle was a shame, the crew chief knew there was a leak in the fuel and elected to fill it with some temporary filler. I had a friend offer the pull the tank and repair it and the crew chief turned him down.

Was able to find out that the B-17 "Nine O Nine", a TP-51 "Betty Jane" and a B-24 are at McClellan in Sacramento through the 4th as part of the

Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom tour. Wish I had the $425 for a ride in the B-17.
