Chicken Rustler, SASS #26680
My Grandfather died about 15 years ago, when he was in the hospital and they found out he was a WWI vet they treated him like a king! All the nurses wanted to take care of him, and this wasn't even a VA hospital. By the way, he also ran into some mustard gas in France, it was pretty bad but I guess he decided he couldn't die cause there was still too much work to do on the farm. He was a skinny little guy, 5'6" at the most, but he could still plow all day behind two mules. I think one of the reasons I like SASS is because in some ways it reminds me of people like hm. Sure, shooting is fun and that fun is the biggest part of it, but it also seems like a lot of the SASS alias personas are based on the kind of people that we wish everybody would be more like. So yes this is a big milestone, and it marks the passing of a generation that was special in a lot of ways, but they also left us a lot that we can still carry on. So, here's to you, WWI vets! Thanks for all you did!

Utah Bob #35998
Dedicated to Frank Woodruff Buckles, US Army Ambulance Corps, 1901-2011 Stalwart Hearts With stalwart hearts and youthful pride they stood with heads held high The war to end all wars befouled and bloodied Europe’s skies From far America, her sons rose up and crossed the sea To Flanders’ fields and Belleau Wood to meet their destiny Through horror scarce imagined, and sacrifice untold Those children of prosperity charged like knights of old To pay an age old debt to France, to stand for liberty To fight with everything they had against foul tyranny In trenches dark and sun washed skies they paid the price in blood So many young lives lost to us in Belgium’s winter mud. Glory was not in their minds nor conquest in their hearts They rose as one and left their homes, hell bent to do their part And those who sailed back at the end to these free homeland shores Stood proud although they knew that things had changed forever more Deep in their eyes a sadness shone for innocence they’d lost And when they slept on darkest nights, in darkest dreams they tossed But through they years they strove to build our country great From shining sea to fruited plain to every proud home state And many lived to see a second war to end all wars And many fell again to guard the heritage that’s yours Through all the years they’ve helped to weave the fabric of this nation Their names on aging monuments, their deeds a celebration And now the last of them has passed to walk on Fiddler’s Green Perhaps such courage as they showed will nevermore be seen We hope their contribution to our treasured native land Will never be forgotten as we honor every man The final notes of the bugle fade, the last man now is gone They all belong to history now, but their legacy lives on

Buck Rio, SASS #60154
From General of the Armies "Black Jack" Pershing to Cpl. Frank Buckles, they all belong to history now. I have always had a special affinity for WWI veterans as my father was one of them. Here is a Youtube link in honor of all those who served in the allied forces from 1914 to 1918.
