  1. What the heck are you guys cleaning with? Steel wool? I break down and clean my guns quite frequently and have never worn a small part or broken something from cleaning it. It's a machine, and all machines need to be checked and friction surfaces lubed. That will wear out a part faster than any cleaning will. Exactly. At one of the clubs I shoot at, there was an email sent out recently requesting folks to attend a 73 clinic since so many had gone down the previous match from lack of maintenance. Wise words indeed. The minute this game I play stops becoming fun and becomes work, it's time for me to change to a different game.
  2. That's my big one too. As well as guesstimate.
  3. Buffy is a good guy. He got me started as well. Hopefully I'll see you soon at Richmond then. I'll be the one surrounded by black powder smoke. I just picked up a new Winchester and haven't had a chance to shoot it at a match yet.
  4. Having both smoke wagons and colts, I'll say that in my opinion, colts are at least twice as good. Three times? Maybe, but I paid just about $700 each for my smoke wagons after work and $1400 about for colts. I guess the value really comes down to what feels better in your hand, which to me is easily 2-3 times worth the price. But we all have to make that decision for ourselves. That's why there are so many different guns available to us.
  5. Lesser service? Never really considered Army Rangers to be lesser than anything.
  6. If you're located in the bay area, check out golden gate western wear in Richmond. They have a ton of boots and hats, plus they'll do custom hats if you can't find what you want. They also have a pretty good selection of old west clothing as well as more modern wear tonfit your needs. Where will you be shooting? Do you have all the gunsyou need? I shoot at all of the clubs within an hours drive so I can meet you at one of them if you need guns. I've got several sets of backups of various kinds to find what you like. Welcome to the best shooting game there is.
  7. Exactly. I majored in English lit and minored in philosophy. Had I done it the other way around, I'd be able to think deep thoughts about being unemployed.
  8. Exactly what I've been doing for the last ten years or so, except for paying the whole thing off of course. That's always easier said than done. If you use it for all your credit card needs, then you really build up the points.
  9. Gunfighter? That's great. Welcome to the club. Now if only we can get you back to the dark side because there's nothing better than FCGF
  10. Thell Reed I believe
  11. More like two years now. And that's after you get your quote. It could take months just to get a quote.
  12. Haha good one
  13. I'm not sure what the point of this thread is, other than to brag about how much better of a black powder shooter you are than the rest of us wannabes. The one thing I like the most about shooting bp is the camaraderie I feel with fellow bp shooters. I don't think we need to start an elitist branch denigrating all those that you think aren't doing it right. I have yet to meet anyone shooting in the bp categories just to increase their competitive advanatage. Maybe they exist, but so far the only ones I've met do it for the love of bp
  14. New frontiers don't fetch the same kind of crazy prices on the auction sites like SAA do, which also hurts resale value. If there is indeed wiggle room, and you like the gun as a shooter, go for it.
  15. This is very sad news. I just shot with George a couple of weeks ago. He seemed in really good spirits, all things considered. He was a great cowboy and will certainly be missed. My condolences to his family.
  16. Exactly. Hickock45 has 400,000 something followers? That's a lot of prime demographic advertising there for next to nothing
  17. That's what my wife is afraid of. I went to the Manteca bass pro once and was about four hours late after that. Besides, with a cabelas credit card I could stay even longer. I've already spent a small fortune online shopping.
  18. Santa loves you a hell of a lot more than me that's for sure
  19. Going to have to completely disagree with you there about hateful eight. An excellent movie
  20. I've never been inside a cabrlas. I think my wife is afraid if I go in I won't ever come back out. Glad to see that things are looking good.
  21. So then you are ok with the op's gun? Cock hammer, pull trigger, right?
  22. I guess that depends on your definition of operates. I don't recall ever seeing an original single action colt with a transfer bar an no firing pin on the hammer. Seems like an integral part of the operating mechanism to me.
  23. I got a call from them the other day confirming that. I'm on the list as well.
