Trailrider #896 Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 Oh, that kind of vernier calipers! Being an old rocket engineer, I thought you were referring to the twin 1,000 lbF thrust rocket engines on the sides of an Atlas-D ICBM/Mercury capsule booster.

You should have know better, this is cowboy action shooting, not rocket science.
Dustin Checotah Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 When I started reloading my mother taught me how to read a micrometer. She had worked in a plant that made surgical wire during the war (WW2). I later went to a Tech School for machine shop and took a course in Precision Measuring Instruments. While I was in school, I worked nights at a machine shop. Later yet I went into the Navy and went to Machinist Mate "A" school and one part was precision instruments. I breezed through what we had to measure and when I took the problems to the instructor, he said that I needed work on my measurements. Most of the guys were using the micrometers like they were calibrated C clamps. I asked the instructor when the last time his instruments were calibrated. I got no answer.
watab kid Posted March 8, 2024 Posted March 8, 2024 yup , i have a number of those and might still have a slide rule around here somewhere , i could still run it too , but id have to reread some instructions on complicated math compilations as ive not used one in years-decades-half a century , life sure does get away from us when we are not looking ,

I had a couple in my tool kit in the army and always had to have current calibration tags for the frequent inspections. The micrometers were for measuring the damage, if found, on nuclear projectiles and components. If you think damage could ever be found on the nukes in the US Army’s inventory, you don’t know the US Army. (it would not surprise me if maintenance has never been performed on Russia’s inventory and the troops were painting the general’s dacha instead.)

The one at the top I used in the Navy's Nuclear Power School. It has I think 24 scales and by the time I was done I could use 22 of them. Now I can maybe multiply and divide with it.
