WTB Warning - Potential Scam Alert

Misty Moonshine

Recommended Posts

Good morning all:

Please be aware that it has been brought to our attention that there may be an unsavory character trolling the wire forum for "looking to buy" posts.  If you post a "WTB" post (Want to buy) - or a post that you are looking for a specific firearm- do your best to know your seller.

This individual feigns old age and bad hearing as to why he cannot take a phone call. He will not produce a serial number or pertinent firearm information. He  will only accept payment via paypal. The photos he produces of the item he wants to sell you are stock photos off of google.

One of those guys tried to scam me. When I would not send money for gun he offered to ship me the gun, if I approved I would then pay him. All I had to do was pay shipping and FFL fee upfront via Venmo. $100 and he would ship it. I guess he figured if he could not get me for $1000 might sucker me into $100!
And yes, pictures were stock photos. I found them using google photo search. I asked him to write my Alias on a piece of paper, take picture of gun. He said he only had a flip phone, his son had to help him with pictures but he was out of town.

these scammers have an answer for anything!

I encourage anyone that is selling, buying, trading or attempting a transaction on the SASS Classifieds (or elsewhere) to read the entire Scammer thread at the top of the main page.

Thanks Misty and the mods for trying to keep a lid on the scammers.

Would you not have to be a SASS member to sell on this forum, even if the buyer is a member?

That is the rule but I have seen many non-dues paying ex-SASS members listing items for sale, so I don't see anything software-wise preventing a scammer from listing something. That's why we all need to be vigilant and not greedy or desperate when we see an item listed. Trust but verify in multiple ways.

They get around that by PMing somebody who placed a WTB add, saying email so and so, they have what you are looking for.

So, they take the conversation off of the SASS wire forum and begin a private back in forth dicker. This info should be included in Misty warning email and info at the beginning of the Forum. Getting cowboys to read those would be the short fall.

Hoss, I would like to thank you for that heads up. Really wanting something bad might drive someone to overlook the warning signs, I am sorry to say. Like I always say "there is no free lunch" and "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is".

Have a great week Hoss.
