Uberti Open Top Ejector Fix

Recommended Posts

Time for a little mini-online article about a problem on many Uberti cartridge conversions and 1872 Open Top revolvers.  Because of the way the ejector is attached to the barrel the ejector rod is no where near the center of the chambers.  Often times it is a PITA trying to line up the chamber and ejector without the hand clicking requiring you to go all the way around the cylinder again to try and line up the chamber.  This is a particular problem with the .38s.  Photo 1 shows the ejector rod laying in the ejector channel so you can see it and how it aligns with the chamber.

To help with this problem Uberti sometimes mills a flat on the ejector rod to provide some clearance with the chamber wall.  On the last pair of .38 Mason Richards I got the rods did not have these flats and one would barely clear the chamber wall with a bit of fiddling and the other drug on the wall no matter how the chamber was aligned.

I decided to fix the problem once and for all as it will make life easier at the unloading table.  I figured how much of the original rod was sticking out after the spring was at full compression and cut off the end of the rod.  I then took some .125" drill rod and inserted it into a hole drilled into the remaining piece of the original rod, i.e., the piece with the threads that screw into the ejector button.  I used Loctite 648 green as it sets quick, is designed for non-threaded surfaces and is permanent.  The end of the new rod was given a nice round tip so it goes smoothly into the chambers.

A brass bushing was made to go inside the ejector rod tube to center the new smaller ejector rod.  All the parts were reassembled and installed back on the gun.

The new ejector now clears the chamber walls and ejects fired hulls like greased monkey snot.

Hopefully next week.  I like to check fit, finish, correct defects and tune them before I fire them.  I do not generally like Army grips but that is all they come with.  If need be I have a set of steel 51 Navy grip frames and grips I will swap for the Army grips.

Picked up my pair of Hickok's this morning.  They will definitely need some tuning.  The actions have a little bump in them and the Army style grips are going to have to go.  With the super short sight radius on a 3" Open Top these are going to have to be natural pointers.  With the Army grips when I point at a spot on the wall the muzzles are pointing up by quite a bit.  The wedge on one fell out when the screw was removed (not a good thing) and the wedge on the other was so tight I made an aluminum driver to knock it out.  The barrels were TIGHT.  They would not come off even when I wrapped them in leather and put them in a vise so I could really pull on the grips.  Won't say how I got them off.  They are so tight right now I cannot measure the arbor to barrel gap, which is the first thing that has to be fixed on all of the Uberti open tops (C&B and cartridge).  The next two days is a warm up match for EOT so I won't even look at these again until next week.  They are neat looking and should be decent BP shooters once they are tuned up.

I've had luck removing (new) tight barrels by dropping a wooden dowel down the bore, then tapping it while holding onto the barrel.  You've probably already got other grips to put on them, but if not it's easy to find someone who wants to trade their Navies for them.
