Probably when they were bought out by Bushnell.

They are all under Vista Outdoors

No offense but my experience with both was abysmal...Aha! I know why. When I bought them they were the Chinese models.

I did a little research, out of curiosity, and found on other forums that it appears the manufacture of Tasco scopes transferred to China in bits and pieces from the 70’s into the 80’s. One gent claims that he got a Japanese made Tasco in the early 90’s.

Since we cannot link Forums on the Wire I will post my search and you can look through it and find the forums discussing Tasco scope manufacturing.

When I got a Tasco scope for my air rifle back in the early 1980s they were regarded as cheap Japanese-made junk. Now they're cheap Chinese-made junk. Of course these days anything made in Japan is considered to be high quality. 20 years from now stuff made in China will probably be considered quality and we'll all be complaining about cheap Somali-made junk instead. Companies like Tasco will always build it wherever they can do it the cheapest.

As noted above, Tasco never manufactured anything, but labelled and sold many things.  Some "junk," some not bad at all - especially for the price.

Somewhere around here I have a fixed 4X Tasco scope that I bought in the early 70's for eight bucks.  Used it for about thirty years and it was just fine... the equal to any Weaver of the period.  Old Hank had a "Tasco" from about the mid-70's with a built in rangefinder/bullet drop compensator.  Supposedly, you would select the animal on a dial, then simply bracket the animal's chest and bingo!  ready to shoot!  We got some good laughs from it - the animals listed were, as I recall, "Moose - Elk - Deer - Coyote - J. Rabbit."

Mister Rabbit, "Jack" to his friends and acquaintances, was shortened to his first initial!  :D

My favorite binoculars ever are a pair of Tasco 7X35 that I paid $35 for about 1985 - the equivalent of about $85 today.  Compact, individual focus (try finding that feature today!), armored, very clear, exceptionally wide field of view, I used 'em for over 25 years, until I moved in 2011 and misplaced 'em.  Convinced they're still in a box somewhere; if and when I find 'em, I'll put away the three sets of Nikons I've bought to replace 'em.

Actually, I was so impressed with them that I went back to Emporium-Capwells department store in San Francisco and bought five more pair for gifts!  All well received; and, to my knowledge, all lost by their owners.

I look at any Tasco labelled product as a stand-alone item, ignore the name for a moment, and evaluate it based on features and apparent quality, then price.

All I know is the Tasco scope I bought back in 96 went goofy on the second round of 30-30 I fired and the Simmons scope I bought to replace it made it through sighting in only to have the reticle break upon being knocked over when I leaned the rifle against my tailgate.

Or was it the Simmons that went blurry and the Tasco reticle break?

Either way they both failed miserably.

I just recently discovered that a Tasco 3-9 x 44  World Class I bought in '01 was made in the Phillipines..seems they did make them all over the place !! Can't say it's been faulty but then I haven't used it much.....
