Rev Lyin Kerrdawg SASS # 57116 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Howdy, I have a Ruger Old army 5 1/2" Blue w/ fixed sights. I have the conversion cylinder in the little bag. Both in the boxes opened twice. Is most of the Old Rugers hid in all the Sass Gun safes? I have thought about getting a mate for it for many years. But with outfitting the The Irish Mafia (wife) and grandkids, who has the money. I just upgraded the Irish mafia with a new 73 in white. Now I'm pondering getting rid of it just to fund the family's habit. Have they hit the mark? Is anyone still looking for them? Not many on the gun sights. Anyone have an opinion out there. I have been drawing up scenerios' for the next month and trying to wind down. Hellooooooooooo! Rev
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 What are you trying to say? If you want to sell it put an ad in the SASS classifieds. People are looking for the fixed sight models.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Last Weekend, I shot 5 of 'em in cap gun Josey Wales in a 10-stage 2-day match. Had a heckuva good time! Too much fun! --Dawg
Rev Lyin Kerrdawg SASS # 57116 Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 If I wanted to put it on the Classifieds I would have. I'm trying to get a conversation on the Ruger Old Armies Have sales slowed down. Have people gave up looking for them or just not the interest anymore. Rev
Rev Lyin Kerrdawg SASS # 57116 Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 Larsen, I'm sorry if I didn't explain myself. I have been drawing and printing up 12 stages of sceneries and a little rum dummy. I should have been more explicit on my wording. Rev

Rev The cap and ball market is small compared to the rest of the gun market. If you look at even large matches the number of Frontiersmen is usually quite small. However, they are dedicated enthusiasts. Since Rugers are the most robust and reliable C&Bs there is a continuing demand for them. Relatively speaking there aren't many of certain models so the market is small but still fairly brisk. People are looking for certain models more than others. Ranking popularity from least popular to most popular I think the line-up is basically as follows: 7 1/2" Blue Adjustable Sights 7 1/2" Stainless Adjustable Sights 7 1/2" Blue Fixed Sights 7 1/2" Stainless Fixed Sights 5 1/2" Blue Fixed Sights 5 1/2" Stainless Fixed Sights The adjustable sight models have virtually no utility in SASS since they aren't legal for Frontiersman. You see lots of them on the used market. (They were made for a much longer time period than the fixed sight models.) The fixed sight models are the ones SASS shooters look for. The short barrel models have become hard enough to find that a lot of people will buy the longer barrel models and shorten the barrels. The prices are also in the same order as the list. Lowest value on the top, highest value on the bottom.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 A pair of ROAs with percussion & conversion cylinders are the universal SASS guns. You can shoot frontiersman or cartridges equally well and equally easily. I have 'em in 3", 5.5", 7.5" , and 12" I carry the conversion cylinders and some cartridges for 'em, so that If I don't wanna shoot frontiersman, I can just pop in the conversions and shoot cartridges. The way they are built, I'm sure my grandson will be shooting them. They are great guns. --Dawg
The Original Lumpy Gritz Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Never could understand why Ruger stopped making the ROA. LG
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Never could understand why Ruger stopped making the ROA. LG Real simple. If you look at the production numbers for the last four or five years the ROA was produced they were LOW. Ruger can't make money selling four or five hundred guns a year. For example, between 2007 and 2008 there were only 153 7 1/2" models and 327 5 1/2" models sold.
Rev Lyin Kerrdawg SASS # 57116 Posted September 17, 2014 Author Posted September 17, 2014 Larsen, Thats some great info and insight on the ROA's. Hey Dawg, (Like in Tombstone) I ain't even heard of anything like that regarding a 12" ROA. I would like to see a picture of that one. I was always interested in The ROA's. I remember years back a man I knew that was not in Sass had a couple of SS 5 1/2". he got into a divorce and found out later he pawned them for $ 100. 00 a piece. I picked up my 5 1/2" with fixed sights and conversion cylinder many yrs ago and its been a safe queen ever since. The last one like I seen was selling for $700.00, OMG! without cylinder. I have a set of Wild Bill's Navys in boxes and and old set of Navys. When I shoot Frontiersman I go to my Rogers and Spencers. I just picked up a set of 5 " 58's with clinders, I would like to make them my go to for Frontiersman. They have Never been shot. The guy was going to shoot Frontiersman, but never did. I have switched over to GF and plan on shooting them. But I just love the ROA. Rev
Doc Fill 'Em 67797 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Recently I've gotten interested in cap and ball revolvers and shooting Frontiersman. I already knew that the Old Army would probably be the most reliable so I began looking for a pair of fixed sight ones. I found out they are few and far between. I did eventually find a nice blued 7 1/2" and 5 1/2" pair. After I got those two it seemed like a bunch of them popped up on Gunbroker. I didn't like the 5 1/2" as well as the 7 1/2" so I sold it and bought a stainless 7 1/2" for a great price. Then later at our annual match Joe Brisco of Cowboy Shooters Supply had his tent set up. On his sale table was a blued 7 1/2" and a stainless 7 1/2" Old Army. I approached him and said "I think we can help each other". I swapped him my blued Old Army for his stainless, now we both have a matched pair. I really like them and as soon as I get more experience loading and shooting them I'm going to try them in a match. They are out there, you just have to look around to find them. They are great guns.
Prairie Dawg, SASS #50329 Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Here's a pic of some of my ROAs. I don't have a pic of the blued 5.5" ROAs I bought from Larsen, but they are fine-shooting guns. I have 6 or 7 conversion cylinders, so, I can be sure that, if I'm bringing these to a shoot, I'll shoot 'em either Frontiersman or FCD. --Dawg
Blackey Cole Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 I have a pair of blued 51/2" that I doubt I'll ever get rid of. I would love to find both extra cylinders and conversion cylinders for them but the machining and cost of the cylinders will probably prevent it for now and I've head that one brace sold for $1300 and another for $1500 in this area so there are no deals right now.

SASS is nut'n but a drop of water in the sea of gun sales LG In my response to your question I didn't say anything about SASS. The numbers produced weren't just sold to SASS members. They were produced to sell to anyone that would buy them. There was no demand, so they quit making them. There is some minimal "demand" now, but not for the thousands Ruger would have to sell in order to warrant producing them again.

Blackey Cole Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I think every roa shot or and would be shooter stopped by the Ruger shop and spoke to them about the demand for them. I even let them know the price of two sets of two that I had heard of them going for which was about twice the msrp. I would love another 51/2" blue one to use as a backup a pair would be nice but not needed. I also would love some extra cylinders at least three each that way for a big match I could show up with all four cylinders ready to go per gun and on regular six stage days I could load two up each during lunch or on one stage loading four cylinders will not take much longer than two. I takes a lot of time to set up everything. Also a set of conversions would be nice for those days where C&B loading isn't fessable. My other desire for these guns would be 1860 army or Bisley grips.
