The plane was attacked by small arms fire during a mission to Amerli in northen Iraq.

“It was the very first flight and the Americans flying top cover reported that small arms fire came up at the plane after it completed its pass,” a source close to the US-led operation said today.

“The fire was not observed by the Australian crew and they were unaware of it until they were informed later by the Americans.”

Yup,

My Dad's company area was adjacent to a company of Aussies when he was in Viet Nam. He said the first thing they did when they got there is dig mortar pits (bear in mind, this was a headquarters/logistics outfit). He said that their idea of a fun night seemed to consist of drinking beer and taking fire missions for their mortars.

Shooting mortars at night is great fun. In fact, shooting mortars is fun most anytime.
