In 1953 Jumbo Johnson appeared in the British childrens comic "The Beano".
He had a model army and air force operated by a remote controller
strapped to his arm.

60 years later came the X-47.

 

Fiction becoming reality.

I don't consider Dick Tracy's wrist radio to be a cell phone. It's like the communications the Secret Service uses.

 

Star Trek communicators - now, those are cell phones.

Probably not, but there is a similar technological jump.

 

In 1953 radio was still very much in demand and TV was the new kid on the block.

 

ALL telephones were land lines.

 

Don't forget about Paul Drake and his car phone. Mobile Telephone Service was introduced about 1948. While it was extremely rare, with only 5,000 or so subscribers, it did exist.
