They've expanded the evac zone into Colorado Springs itself, and are opening up new shelters and restricting one lane each way of I-25 to evacuees and emergency vehicles.... :(

I've seen thunderstorms turn a fire 90- to 180 degrees in a minute. Scary. Especially when it comes at ya and you're the only truck in sight!

Hey... Uturn... you ain't close to that crap are ya? You got all that stuff up on that hill... that Elk trail... all the way down to the campground...

If it is as dry as I know it can be... a fire would be tough to defeat.

You OK?

Concerned...

Thanks CK, what we really need is a good rain dance! er two or three with maybe a week of rain.

But I am sure there are other areas of the country that are just as drought stricken as we are or even more so.

I hate hearing about the devastation of the fires out there. I will keep you all in my thoughts and meditations.

I was amazed at how many people owned horses, but no way to transport them. Volunteers have been moving the large animals out as fast as possible, but some owners have had to leave their animals behind when they left.

According to Channels 2 & 7 this morning and Fox News (national) a minute ago, 379 houses destroyed and 2 KIA! Poor folks were trying to pack up stuff and were apparently on the phone when the flames blew up in their faces! :(

Winds have died down today, permitting the air tankers to go up (too windy yesterday).

Prayers up for everybody in the fire zones.

kktv cbs ch 11 in Colorado Springs is stating that there are now 389 homes destroyed. They are able to get to some houses that they couldn't get to before.

These are not really new destruction but rather realization that they were destroyed.

One thing I forgot to include in my 9am post was that the northern part of the elbert county mandatory evacuation has been reduced.

.

Mandatory from county line (with El Paso county) north to county road 86.

Pre-evac now from road 86 north to county road 98.

West boundary is county line with douglas county

East boundary of both mandatory and pre-evac is North Elbert Rd.

i just got back from a grocery run.

The store is over nearer to the burn area.

It was raining.

Temps have dropped to lower 70s even 60s.

Downside is lightning.

Appears that a small fire was started near I-25, possibly by lightening.

Latest news as kktv reports, Colorado Springs has removed all mandatory evacuations and made them voluntary.

Southern edge of voluntary has moved north.

This appears to be good news.

News helicopter showing tree that appears to be hit by lightning.

It was on fire and had been snapped near the ground.

5pm press fire conference.

New numbers on homes destroyed 400. Not new destruction, just able to get to see more houses.

2388 homes unaffected

12 homes partial loss.

7000 yet to check.

Eastern edge of mandatory has been reduced.

Western edge of mandatory has been reduced.

mandatories are into pre-evac.

Fire area looks much better.

30% containment.

All areas reported success, no new structure losses.

15,700 acres burned.

Aerial pix show lots of unburned areas in the core of the fire area.

El Paso county sheriffs office has reduced the scheduled fire press conferences from two meetings to a single meeting.

9am and 5pm to a single at noon.

No news on how fire started and no news on the cod for the two deceased.

Rain has helped the fire. But not enough to put it out.

No significant movement. Still flames.

Latest update we are at 473 homes total loss. We have shooters in there I just do not know if they are ok, their home is not listed either way yet.

Please prayers up.

The loss of homes at 473 does not represent any new homes destroyed but rather, the people surveying losses have been able to reach those homes.

Additionally all the pre-evacs west of 83 have been lifted.

It appears that Colorado Springs has eliminated all evac status for the area.

Elbert county has lifted all evacuation status.

Next fire fighting news conference is at noon.

Channel 11 the CBS affiliate has decided to return to normal programming after noon today.

Also El Paso County Sheriff who runs the fire fighting news conference decided to go to one conference a day at noon.

Latest on Black Forest Fire 75% contained, 483 homes destroyed.

Mandatory evac area are shrinking. Still have Pre-Evac areas those that were mandatory.

Fire incident page still lists growth potential as high.

Royal gorge fire is listed as 100% contained. No residences destroyed but a bunch of structures at the gorge facility.

...our friends got back to their home today... ...read home intact.. ...60% of the ground cover is burned off with 20% of the trees showing fire damage... ...they are very thankful and appreciate all the prayers and rain dances that have been lifted up...

OKB, That sounds great !

At this time 75% containment, 502 homes listed as destroyed and another 18 damaged.

This really reflects the damage assessment teams reaching more homes (and better mapping I suspect.)

I suspect they are seeing the houses during the day now as well. Previous visits were reportedly at night.

Weather here has been more humid, cooler and more overcast.

There has been some rain in the area. Not sure how much made it to the ground where needed.

More areas are being relaxed from mandatory to pre-evac.

OKB, I'm glad your friends' home is ok, and very thankful they themselves are too. As horrible as the news has been from the Black Forest (all those homes and 2 deaths) and the Royal Gorge (most of the park structures gone), this morning I found a tiny bit of happy news coming out of it:

85 % Containment.

502 homes destroyed, 18 damaged, some unassessed.

El Paso County Sheriffs office expects numbers to go up.

This reflects the ability to get to some of the homes.

Many areas of mandatory evac have been reduced to pre-evac.

Some areas are reopening for owners to return for viewing not occupancy.

Some are still closed as they are still hot fire wise.

Some are closed as they are under investigation for point of origin.

Good weather has been key in containment increase in containment.

The good news is the Black Forest Fire is now 95% contained, with 100% predicted for today (we hope).

The bad news is there's now at least 4 more fires going across the state....it ain't over yet! :(
