Warden Callaway Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I got the use of a Rapine hollow base 45 255g mold. Once I got the pot up to temperature and flowing pretty good and the mold heated up, they started to come out better. I quit about the time it was working good. I'm more into Lee 6 cavity molds. I cast two shots of Lee 457 round ball 6 hole mold. The single cavity mold that had to be turned upside down was painfully slow. I may try a few in my Ruger Old Army. 1 Quote
Three Foot Johnson Posted January 1 Posted January 1 I've found hollow base molds to be notoriously difficult to cast good bullets. When casting 500 grain Minie's from a single cavity Lyman for my 1861 Springfield repro, it's normal to reject one out of three, and often two out of three. Shooting one at a time, a handful will last you all day though, so... 1 Quote

Warden Callaway Posted January 2 Author Posted January 2 It was too cold. That's why I stopped early. Here's what the Rapine mold looks like. It has a built-in bottom pug. Worked as well as I expected. 2 Quote

El Sobrante Kid Posted January 3 Posted January 3 Definitely don't hate on DD, he pays a very heavy price in the Summer, for the mild Winter temps. 1 1 Quote
Nickle Posted January 5 Posted January 5 I'm in Alberta. Cold 10 degrees F is still good casting weather if no wind. I would rather be casting bullets than doing other jobs outside when cold. Always seem to be more important things to be doing on a nice day. I have an old Lyman mag 20 furnace. I preheat molds on kitchen gas stove. I'm the summer it's to hot and I sweat. Always get bees and other bugs drawn to me while my hands are full and busy trying to cast. Quote
Cypress Sun Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Bullet casting on a winter's day. Reminds me of a song.... All the slag is gone And the lead is grey All turned to liquid On such a winter's day. 3 Quote
