Western Movies

Does a site exist where Western Movie buffs could discuss likes and dislikes of movies they viewed? What you like to see versus what you dislike Personally, I like behind-the-scenes trivia, favorite character actors, and personal info regarding many of them. You get the idea. I know movies are discussed here, but not to the degree mentioned. IMBD has a lot of trivia, that could be used in the discussions. Thank you.

I don't know. But I do enjoy some of the extras that they have with some movies. I don't care about them on all movies but it's interesting with some of my favorites to see the additional info.

An example is the Tarantino movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Leonardo de Caprios character is a movie and tv actor. They wanted to insert him into scenes from an actual "the FBI" tv series. They looked for a truck to duplicate some scenes and the truck they found was the actual truck used in the old series. They also found the actual car that the Manson family used when they committed the murders. They decided it would be too much to use the car and instead paid the owner to let them take detailed photographs. Then they duplicated the car.

Films have a costume director per what I see. So a film set in the 1870s should not have actors? wearing 1970s hats etc.

I seriously doubt that Hollywierd costume directors know or care about period correct clothing any more than they know or care about period correct guns. The costumer is going to dress their actors in whatever the movie director wants or can afford, or both. 

If it's a Western, they're just going to say "Cowboy hat" and let it go at that.

You might want to check out A Word on Westerns  on Youtube.  Rob Word puts out a new show every Sunday.  He has guests that were in many of the old western movies and TV shows.

As opinionated as we all seem to be, I don't see why it couldn't be discussed here. Start a thread and watch it take off.

Exactly. I endorse that. 

 

We often talk about favorite Westerns, lists of the 'greats', etc., but seldom talk about the various elements specifically that make a particular Western good, or great. I'd jump into such a discussion. 

 

I've always thought that it's not enough to say 'that's a great movie' and just fall back on personal preference. Why is it good? Why is one better than another?  The actors. The theme. The directing. Many things.

 

It's not all subjective. We can discuss objective reasons for comparison.

 

Start the discussion. It'd be a great thread!

Tom Selleck tries for a lot of authenticity in his westerns.  Saddles, firearms, etc. But he admitted that the one area they were more lax in was with the hats.

To be fair, from what I've read, most cowboys wore either Bowlers or "Boss of the Plains" hats, neither of which have much style, and would bore the audience. 

When Costner did "Wyatt Earp", it seemed like everybody was wearing brown. BORING.

Yes. That was his reasoning for being more flexible with the hats in the movies.

For a 'Western' thread, we'd need some rules.

 

For example, 'No Country for Old Men' and 'Hell and High Water' are not Westerns.

Neither is "Brokeback Mountain".

I'd say anything set any later than the 1930s, (that way many Roy Rogers and Gene Autry movies qualify) don't count. Neither do things like "Yellowstone", "Longmire", or "Justified".
