Bugler
I have been using a Stoeger Coach gun for about 10 years or so in SASS matches with outstanding results until a June SASS match where a multitude of problems surfaced.. Recoil that was once mild is brutal even with Win AA Low Noise Low recoil!!! When firing the action drops open on its own... On one stage only one side fired....open action dropped in 2 fresh rounds....closed the action and both barrels went off ...fingers were nowhere near the triggers.!! My once totally reliable SxS is now dangerous and unreliable to say the least. Anyone have suggestions for me? Send it to Stoeger and let them figure it ou? Eyesa Horg
A good and complete cleaning would be a good place to start, including removing the butt stock and cleaning the action. Be careful to not overtighten the stock bolt! There is a torque spec in the little manual that came with it. Also check the above mentioned thread. Marauder SASS #13056
After 10 years, the gun will need more than cleaning - but cleaning is always a good start. The listed link covers the exact situation you are seeing.
Bugler
I can see how the action dropping open problem takes place....how does this solve the brutal recoil and having both barrels discharge when closing the action?

Figuring this problem out starts with a good cleaning and inspection. My first thought is the firing pins may be dirty and stuck. Both problems are bad things. I have a Stoeger which opens, did find making one do it on purpose is an illegal mod. So agree the gun is down until fixed. I'm just trying to get time to look at mine again, the recent thread linked above is excellent IMO. Previous inspection of mine agrees with that thread. I can't see a reason for more recoil with one shell... Hope you had a good grip when both barrels went off on the close without triggering them. I'm thinking maybe both barrels fired at the same time or you had an unusually hot shell or two. 2
Sedalia Dave
Several years ago I got a box of LNLR AAs that contained mostly AA Heavy Trap loads. Know this because the shells were marked as such. 1
Assassin
Back when I was trying hard and practicing a Stoeger sxs would last about 6 months. 10 years is a good run. Mine wouldn't fire, then would work fine, then fire both barrels, then work fine, the gun would open after firing, stock cracked and fell apart, rib came unsoldered, gunsmith said it was beyond repair. I went through 4 in two years. Back then they were $300 guns. Once you lose confidence in a gun, get rid of it. 1

Eyesa Horg
If you've done any mods, that may be the last you'll see if it.

Stoeger will declare the your shotgun unsafe if there have been ANY modifications made to it. As EH stated, you may never see it again. "Big Boston"
Just my opinion, a gun is just a tool. They wear out like a tool, they need to be maintained, they sometimes require repair, and sometimes they need to be replaced. After 10 years of good service, and because they are still being made, and they are just as good as yours was when it was new, and they are still relatively inexpensive, I'd just replace it and move on. A couple of more double discharges and you'll have a flinch that will dog you for years. BB
