When I was involved in War of 1861 reenacting EVERYONE was all eager to play with the gun, but when it came time to clean it, everyone disappeared.  Nor did they think about the cleaning and care it needed after an event.  Sponging with soapy water, rinsing, oiling it down, wiping down, and at least once a year, waxing the carriage and implements.  Touching up the paint.

Of course, there was also the fun the first time any of the neighbors saw me pull it out of the garage and roll it off the trailer.  :D
When we lived in Clearlake Oaks people warned us that we were on a "bad street." But for some reason, because people saw that parked out front from time to time, there was no trouble there.

One of the reasons I quit black powder for CAS, that and the added expense of more powder and lubed bullets. I do have to admit though it was the most fun I had shooting CAS.

Black Powder and Subs are way more fun than that fad Heathen smokeless stuff.  BP and Subs are also easier to clean-up after than smokeless.  The BIG difference is you HAVE to CLEAN after BP and Subs.  Now, the really really FUN part of BP and Subs is when your shooting Cap Guns.  Cap Guns Gunfighter even more better!!

I had to stop using HOLY BLACK as I got older and too tired when I got home.

Cleaning a couple of 1858's, the Yellow Boy and the Open Hammer SXS just got to be too much and SWMBO couldn't be talked into doing it for me.
