Marshal Mo Hare, SASS #45984
September 1990, Bo Jackson hit a hard one hopper back at Nolan Ryan. The ball hit Ryan in the face. Put a 2” gash in his lip requiring 6 stitches. The blood poured. Ryan threw the ball to first for the out and kept pitching. He did not wipe the blood off his face. Stayed in the game for another 17 outs, striking out 8 in 7 innings while licking his own blood. Ryan said he put it out of his mind. 5
Cypress Sun
I'll bet that Bo was just a little more than apprehensive about the next at bat. Wasn't it Nolan Ryan that would hit the batter if he was supposed to walk him?

I just saved three pitches!” I don’t recall Ryan ever hit a batter for personal revenge. He, like every other major league pitcher of that period, WOULD plunk a batter in retaliation for something done to his teammates. In those days it was practically a requirement!

That's right, it was Drysdale! Thanks.
Blackwater 53393
That Nolan Ryan never won the Cy Young award is a total travesty!! It took until Mariano Rivera for a player to finally be unanimously elected to the Hall of Fame, but Ryan certainly deserved to be!! 3
J-BAR #18287
"Facing Nolan" is a wonderful documentary about Mr. Ryan, currently streaming on Netflix. During an interview with former President Bush, Mr. Bush mentions asking Nolan if he intentionally hit that batter. Nolan replied, "George, sometimes you just have to take control of the situation!" I believe Nolan never hesitated to claim the inside of home plate as his.
DeaconKC
Robin Ventura of the White Sox is the only player to get 6 hits by Nolan Ryan in one outing! 1
