Dutch Nichols, SASS #6461 Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Sold a gent a shotgun I asked for ffl with payment . He said I was NOT up on current laws and as of I guess TODAY ffl holders CANNOT send a copy to an individual. I said today in jest. I know some ffl holders will only do ffl to ffl xfers but that's their choice but his guy says it's now the law.Which I think is Baloney!! Please only ffl holders answer thiis , PLEASE. PS I know BATFE sent a news letter recently asking license holders to only do ffl to ffl xfers but it was NOT mandated. My Thanks in advance.
BenW Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 I've had my license for 30+ years now, first I've heard of this. However, it is much more common to merely ask for a receipt. Most of us don't want copies floating around loosely, but I had not heard anything about a law. Not sure how it would be enforced.
Sedalia Dave Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 I asked my FFL and he has not heard of this. When he sends a copy to anyone it is marked "For Transfer Only" in big letters.
Springfield Slim SASS #24733 Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 There is really no good reason to send a copy of an FFL as any dealer can be looked up on the BATFE website to see if it is current. A good idea even if you do get a copy. According to my FFL, who no longer sends out copies.
Itchy Trigger Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Probably is a state law in places like Kalifornia, not a federal law.
John Barleycorn, SASS #76982 Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Not a law. There are even dealers with websites that their FFL can be downloaded from.

I really did not fully understand why it was marked that way, or what difference it makes if someone has a copy of somebody’s FFL? FWIW I have a C&R FFL. I’ve only used it a couple of times.
BenW Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 I usually mark mine also, something like "File Copy Only" in big black print.

With a "signed" copy of a dealers FFL - an individual can claim to be a representative of that dealer and make purchases from other shops or at gunshows (items that would not be shipped to the dealers premises). For instance; I carry a stack of FFL copies when attending gunshows or sales so I may purchase directly from other dealers and have the transfer logged correctly. "For Transfer Only" should signify to another dealer that this license copy is not designated for purchases. That's why we only provide our FFL copy to other FFL dealers - for individuals; we provide our FFL number so they may look us up on FFL EZ check to verify address and validity of our license but without providing paperwork that might enable fraud.

Ok. Thanks
