Lone Star, by T.R. Fehrenbach. The finest history of Texas, but comprehensive and includes much about the West in general. Really good insights into the Indian tribes, and of the types and groups who made up the Westward migration. Very readable.

I am looking for some new books to read and wanted to get your recommendations for books on the history of the old west. What are some  of your favorite?

Check out Buck Shot Bears thread about the Empire of the Summer Moon there are a lot of good books posted there if you scroll down.

Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides.

It’s a biography of Kit Carson, who knew everyone and went everywhere in the pre-Civil War west.

A Terrible Glory by James Donovan.

It is a very thoroughly reseached and readable history of Custer before and at the Little Bighorn.
