Mike Rowe – Can you please explain to me why 18 million people watched this Harry and Meghan interview with Oprah? With respect to everyone involved, who cares? Personally, I saw two incredibly privileged people complain for an hour to a billionaire who treated them like victims. Did you watch? If so, what did you think?

Carole Dinsmore

Hi Carol

I’ve never been much for soap operas, so I didn’t watch this one. And from what I’ve read, I’m glad I didn’t.

Apparently, a lot of people who watched were left wondering what kind of grim future awaits them, if a royal couple can’t figure out a way to find happiness. I can’t speak to the actions of the royals, or the reasons 18 million Americans tuned in to get all the “juicy details,” or the decision of Piers Morgan to walk off his TV set in disgust. I can only offer the aggrieved an alternative interview - a modest 5-minute exchange conducted a few months earlier, between myself and a young woman named Chloe Hudson.

To state the obvious, I’m no Oprah, and Chloe is not descended from royalty. She's a young woman of modest means from South Carolina who dreamed of becoming a plastic surgeon, but reconsidered that dream when she learned the tuition would be north of $400,000. So, Chloe went another way. She applied for and received a work ethic scholarship from my foundation and went to work. Today, Chloe is a professional welder making six-figures a year, doing something she has learned to love, and working when and where it suits her.

The attached video will probably not be viewed by 18 million people, and that’s a shame. Because Chloe Hudson is precisely the kind of woman who deserves our attention. Why? Because Chloe is a perfect example of what’s possible when a decent work ethic is combined with the mastery of a skill that’s in demand. She’s also the kind of person I’m looking to assist this year, as we distribute one million dollars in scholarship money to the next generation of skilled workers.

Please give it a look, and if you know someone like her, invite them to apply at mikeroweWORKS.org. If not, and you feel inspired to contribute to our program, consider yourself officially invited to do so. Either way, please share the video. In the meantime..

“God save the trades” is right.
What will this world be like when all we have is a bunch of young people with Computer Science degrees?

Short bit if a story:

When I lived in Oregon I was at a BiMart (my favorite store in the planet)  at the gun / ammo counter. There were three young men there talking and looking at hunting rifles. One of them said to the others “So where are you going after graduation?” One pipes up with “I am going to Oregon State to learn Computer Science” (or computer engineering or some like that).

The first one, that asked said “Same here only I am going to Blah-Blah university” (I didn’t catch / don’t remember the name)

Both these two new members of the brain trust them turned to young man number 3 and said something like “So where are you going?”

Young man number 3 looked visibly embarrassed and said “I can’t go to college. Can’t afford it. I am going to be an electrician. I went up to Portland to the IBEW union hall and signed up to be an apprentice. I start on a job two weeks after graduation.”

The other two boys looking visibly pompous and full of themselves made a couple of smartassed comments.
The lady behind the counter gave them a dirty look. She and I made eye contact and I winked at her and then commenced dressing down the brain trust.
I said something like ( I cannot remember the exact words)...Hey gents, out of the three of you guess who will be pulling down a 6 figure income in less than 4 years if he works hard and does all his studying like he is supposed to?”

The two college boys got all puffed up smiling at each other. Gent number three was standing there looking at me with a puzzled Look on his face.
“Him!”

I pointed out the kid that was going to electrician school.

”He will be making $100,000 a year well you two are working at Starbucks trying to figure out how you’re going to get a decent job. Computer science majors are a dime a dozen. You’ll be lucky to get a job pulling down 40 grand a year. So don’t pick on that kid for wanting to go to the electrician school.”

The college boys looked surprised, dejected and embarrassed all at the same time. I looked at young man number 3 and winked. Then I walked away.
A couple days later I was back at that store at the gun counter and the lady that worked there and witnessed what I said to those boys thanked me for jumping in on that conversation. She told me her son was thinking about becoming a plumber. I told her he was smart for doing that.

All these kids today want to do is fool around on computers and create “Apps” that will make them millions. Dumbasses! That’s what they are and so are their parents for allowing it.
We don’t need more over-educated “Baristas” and fast food clerks. We need more trades people.

Anyone ever see the movie Wall-E? The perfect lesson for kids...if parents are smart enough to pick up on it and explain it to them.

most parents of kids small enough to be swayed by something their parents explain to them are dumbasses themselves who wouldn't understand the not-so-veiled "lessons" in Wall-E.

There are fewer and fewer "parents"  - baby delivery vehicles and sperm donors.
