Same as a hexagonal one.  Whitworth built both rifles and cannons with hexagonal bores.

He was writing the patent. Wanted to protect his invention before someone could write a new patent copying his invention but using square bullets.

I always laugh when I hear the "Founding fathers could have never imagined the progression of weaponry....."  Hell they endorsed individuals owning warships with cannons that could level a small coastal town.
