We have a cheap one we got at Best Buy for about $20. It works well in our metro area, except for high winds and bad weather as Lumpy mentioned. However, it's channel specific in those conditions which can often be resolved by moving the antenna like we did with rabbit ears in the old days.

I know Skynet works (think movies)

It doesn’t work yet. But it will.

This gizmo, fire Stick, and a host of others don't work in my neighborhood.  One area of several here that are "Dead Zones".  It doesn't bother me much.  I miss TV sorta like Europe missed the black plague.
