Capt. James H. Callahan
Justice Lilly Kate posted this on FB earlier. The Riv closed at 12 noon today. Saddens me deeply. Salty Sarah and I started staying there on our (then) yearly trips to Vegas. Was our favorite place even before SASS started having conventions there. Went to 12 or so conventions, had some shining times! Guess the sun sets on most every thing and every one. I went to the last SASS convention there 2-3 years ago, and almost wish I'd stayed home. Hardly knew the place, they had screwed it up so badly. I came home never wanting to go to Vegas in general and the Riv in particular again. I lift my glass to her memory.....to all the good times and the good SASS friends who shared them. Slainte! JHC

Allie Mo, SASS No. 25217
I had some great times there. Especially before they closed the Splash bar. After the last two years with disgusting rooms, I vowed to never stay there again. The last time, I should have insisted they comp my room; it was that bad. Alas, I was too shy to do that. Really. I'm glad it's gone and I won't be put in the dilemma of deciding where else to stay during the convention.
Guest Milo Talon SASS #23163
I will lift a glass with you Capt. Callahan. My wife and I went to all the conventions at The Riv and enjoyed the earliest ones very much. Seems to me I ran into you a number of times up there. Big Sage, SASS #49891 Life
I have great memories of it. Stayed there in 1962 when I was 21. Had a great time and remember seeing Dean Martin there playing Blackjack. Last time I was there was about 10 years ago and just went in to have a drink and see the place again. Walked in and turned around and left. It was a dump.
Capt. James H. Callahan
First year I was a TG we had the meetings at the "New" Frontier. Now THAT was a dump! Stayed one night and checked into the Riv the next day! JHC

Happy Jack, SASS #20451
The Riv was the finest Casino in Las Vegas when it was built. The first really high-rise. 9 stories tall when most were only 2. Every one of the stars of the time played there (or wanted to). Barbara Streisand (a nobody) opened for Liberache there. He was the highest paid act in the Country in those days. It was THE place to be and be seen. Sadly it hasn't seen any real updates or care since the 1980's. Like many aging beauties, it's time has past. Actually sad to see her go downhill so far. Those who only have memories of the recent past should not be so quick to judge a great Casino that was allowed to die a slow death. We all get old and tired as time passes. It's just too bad that the Star of the Strip was allowed to descend beyond repair.
Utah Bob #35998
Poor management. The Golden Nugget downtown is one of the oldest in Vegas but it is meticulously maintained and upgraded.
