Doc Flimshaw Sass# 73310 Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Too bad it didn't show what happened inside the turret when the gun went off, that's what I wanted to see
Subdeacon Joe Posted June 9, 2013 Author Posted June 9, 2013 Weird, a couple of years ago I could find at least a half dozen videos of the inside of the turret during firing. Now, this is the best I can find quickly. www.youtube.com/watch?v=okKQeQZeJts
Badlands Bob #61228 Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 While watching those guys load 6 big bags of powder got me to thinking. How many 38's could I load with the powder it takes to fire one of those guns?
Charlie Harley, #14153 Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 Don't think too hard, BB. It will make your head burst!
Subdeacon Joe Posted June 9, 2013 Author Posted June 9, 2013 Hmmm....600 pounds ... 600 Lb x 7000 grains per Lb= 4,200,000 grains. Say a 20 grain charge 4,200,000/20 = 210,000. Granulation might be a bit coarse for a .38 though.
Capt. James H. Callahan Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 While watching those guys load 6 big bags of powder got me to thinking. How many 38's could I load with the powder it takes to fire one of those guns? About 10 Sh--loads! JHC
Clay Mosby Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 OK, I'll admit to my dumb-ness and ask. Why do they refer to it as a 16", 50 caliber gun? Couldn't figure it out from the video.

The gun is 50 calibers long. 16" x 50 = 800 inches. Messed with my head the first time I heard someone refer to a 5" 38 caliber when obviously referring to a gun on a ship. There was also a 5" 25 cal. gun.
Clay Mosby Posted June 9, 2013 Posted June 9, 2013 See, even at 62 ya can still learn things! Thanks SDJ
