I'd heard those were Galvanized Yankees ... they were said to have "swallered the dog."

Copperheads were Southern sympathizers living in the Yankee North, and were so known because they would cut the Lady Liberty's head from a coin and wear it as a pin.

Just like wearing a Secession cockade, it often led to fist fights and other forms of social entertainment.
