Speed loaders for break top revolvers

Recommended Posts

Gather 'round my friends, for I have wisdom and information to share.  Some of you may know of these peaces of gold, but I only found one person who did.

I mentioned in another thread that I had a Uberti / Cimarron First Model American in .45 Colt.

I like the gun, but I can't see spending range time reloading the thing one round at a time, SO.......speed loaders came to mind!

I traveled hither, thither, and yon for some that would fit and found that they are as scarce as eyebrows on eggs.

It was suggested that the H.K.S.. 25-5 might work with .45 Colt and after a real long search ( maybe three hours including time for lunch) with personal visits, a couple of phone calls, and computers I finally located some at Bill's Second Hand in Prescott.  I took my gun and some snap caps...and a half dozen live rounds to try them out.  He had two left.  They aren't perfect but they work very well.

I bought those and put my name on a list for when more came in, ordered a 20 round box of .45-60 Winchester rounds, and got to doing some more research.  Thanks to some friends I found that they will work well on clones of Americans, Schofields, Russian, and the Beretta Laramie copy of an S&W #3 Frontier (Which many companies who should know better claim to be Beretta's copy of a Schofield.  If they don't know what they are talking about they won't get my business.)

Now, here's piece of welcome info for you: they will work on .44-40, .44 Russian, and .44 Special in those same guns.

BTW, I called Scott at Cimarron Arms with this info.  I had asked him earlier this week if he knew of any speed loaders that would work.  He said it had come up before but he hadn't looked into it.  Now he doesn't have to.

Onward now to find a similar solution for  S&W Baby Russians, .38 Second and Third Models and the .38 MexicanModel.  All are five round guns and I have a couple that are in really good shape and functional.

This is my third model Russian and an HKS 29, which is the one made for the Smith & Wesson 29 44 Magnum.

It works fine. Never considered trying one made for a 45 Colt.

My 38 Single Action (often referred to as a Baby Russian, but mine is the second model so it's not. The Baby Russian is only the first model).

HKS speed loader number 36. Made for j frame 38. Five shot. That first picture it's got 38 specials in it, but as you can see by the last one it will hold 38 Smith & Wesson.

Thanks.  I have a second model and a friend has a Baby Russian.  I also have a .38 DA that might be the same size.

No, custom. Russ N. Hound. He used to do laser engraving. Don't know if he's still involved in SASS. But I always wanted to have that gun engraved. Oak leaves and acorns - don't like them swirlies that most people consider gun engraving. Never could come up with the extra money.

But I got Russ to do my grips in oak leaves, and Big Ed carved me a holster.

Ed did some fine leather whittling. This is a different rig.

I don't have a 38 DA, but I do have a 38 New Departure, and it works for that real fine.

Not really applicable, but I once had a terrible "itch" for a pair of Three and a Half Inch Schofields, modified for Moon Clips.  Just never got the folding green together to do the project.  Also turned out, shooting 'em gunfighter is hard work.

I have had Russ do several jobs for me.  He was as good as anyone, but I haven't had an occasion to give him any work for the last few years.

He did a faux ivory inlay on a rifle stock that was so perfect that I coudn't feel nor see a seam.. It is smoother than a paint job.

Hey, Doug, are you till out there?  I might have another job for you.

It'd be neat if someone could make a 45acp cylinder for a 45colt break top.

I'd rather have a wheel gun that takes moon clips.
