NEW Ruger SBH Bisley hard to cock

Chief Rick

Recommended Posts

I don't own it.

Picked up a brand new one in .454 Casull today at LGS.

Extremely hard to cock.

The cylinder had a "knock" when spinning it - like something was making contact.

I know I'm spoiled with my slicked up, short-stroked NMVs - but this was worse than my ROAs.

Anyone else experienced with the SBH Bisleys?  Is this normal?

There is a plunger and spring in the hammer that rides on the back end of the cylinder stop/bolt.  Foriegn material in the plunger chanel or bent or broken spring or plunger can cause this or a very  similar problem.  Take the hammer out and check the plunger for freedom of movement.

Sorry, that's all I got.

What was the clerks reaction at this store, when informed of this issue?

Is the base pin (cylinder pin) fully inserted?

Silly question but this might cause it.

Yes.

It was actually very difficult to get the cylinder pin out initially.

I do like the cylinder pin on this SBH.

I'd like to put them in my NMVs if they'll fit & function.

But I can't find them online...

Looking on Ruger's website - it appears this may be a Lipsey's distributor exclusive.

SS .454 with 4.62" barrel.

I may have it follow me home next week and just send it in to Ruger.

Again, I know I'm spoiled with my CAS revolvers - but this particular revolver not only had a very heavy hammer but also a very heavy trigger.

I've been longing for this particular style of SA revolver for a few years, though.

Why not have that dealer order another one instead?

Always an option.

Curious if they're all coming from the factory that way or if this one slipped through QC as "good enough".

Bet it's gonna have to go back to Ruger as Lipsey's doesn't show the .454 in stock.

A review from Bud's on 3/22/19:

Quote

The Super Blackhawk frame felt robust and sturdy but the fit and finish was left much to be desired! The grips are not fitted to frame very well and the grip frame on mine did not match up flush with the main frame. The back of my grip frame had deep scratches on it almost like someone took a screwdriver to it! The most disappointing thing is I haven%u2019t had a chance to shoot it yet as upon receiving it I clearly noticed something was very wrong with the timing so I immediately sent it back to Ruger for warranty work! I like Ruger brand of firearms just not sure why my 454 Casull looked and operated as though it was rushed in being manufactured!

They are very nice.

Handled them at the SHOT Show every year I've been.

Howdy Chief.

I've been tempt the past year or so to also get me a Bisley SBH in .454

But, as soon as I get it, I will be sending it to Snake Oil George to put either a 3.5"

Octagon barrel or a 7" Octagon barrel on it.   I ain't decided yet.

Of course, I've also debated about getting the .460 S&W with the 5" ported barrel.   That little baby is a beautiful

beast.

Good luck.

I wouldn't want to shoot full-house .460 S&W loads from anything less than my ported 8 3/8" barrel.

.454 Casull loads would be quite manageable with the shorter barrel but the frame is still quite heavy.

That's why I'm looking at the SBH Bisley with 4 3/4" barrel.

For a more comfortable "carry" beast I really like the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan with 2 1/2" barrel - .454 of course.

reduced power shooters pak from Wolff springs manufacture part number 33250 would do wonders for it

If this follows me home it will go straight back to Ruger first.

My FA .454 has a 4 3/4" bbl, full house 300-325 grn bullets, with loads packed with H-110 powder are truly a double handful.

Widder-Go with the .454. No issues get'n brass.......

I already got the brass, bullets, AND reloading dies left over from my Taurus Raging Bull .454 I previously owned.

I miss its power.   Been thinking of the .454 again in the SBH Bisley setup.

I love the look of the shorter octagon barrels..... but I love the power produced by 7" barrels that are still viable

woods carry guns.

Decisions, decisions!

LUMPY:   After testing H110, AA9 and LilGun,  I felt like I got my best performance with LilGun.

But, on any given day, any of those powders could make Godzilla choke.

;)

Try AA9 and LilGun in freezing temps. I found the performance to drop off.

H-110 doesn't care how cold or hot the weather is.

A fun plink'n .454 load is 9gn of Unique, and a 255gn LSWC.

You can use a std SP primer with this load.
