It is about that time of life where I need a little bit of help hearing. :P

Any advice on muffs that work well and can be used with a cowboy hat?

Pro Ears 200 behind the neck @ 70 bucks

Caldwell E-max behind the neck @25 bucks

Howard leight, which is my new favorite (sorry ProEars) doesn't have a behind the neck model that I can find. I'd go with the ProEars, they're pretty good.

these are some of the best

MSA Sordin Supreme pro x,

Peltor Comtach III

TCI Liberator II

That said I have 6 pairs of the Howard Leights at my house. They frequently are on sale. I bought the last 2 pairs last month from amazon for $27 a pair. They are good for the money. Some people with weird shaped heads say they dont seal well around the ears.

No advice though for wearing with a hat.

A little pricey but I am using Walker Game ears, with added molded ear plugs.

They muffle sun shots and amplifie voices.

This is what I have been using also. But you have to compromise. Little extra noise for being able to hear TO. GW

This is what I use also. A little compromise between a little less sound reduction but the ability to hear TO and other range commands GW

I use Pro Ears Pro 300. I can adjust the volume of normal sounds, but loud sounds are cut off. Behind the neck band works well with a cowboy hat.

I took a look at Planetoptics web site and could not find the model I have with a behind the neck band. If I was buying today I would get these.

I use Peltor 6S with a behind the neck band. They are satisfactory but only provide 19 dB protection. I had a pair of Caldwell amplified muffs once. The electronics were inferior.
