Poet Jones 99980 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Hey pards, I am still searching for my first coach gun. Today I noticed a Jing An Arms SPM-12 at a local pawn shop. Of course, they are askin' way high a price for it, close to new price. It has a small piece of the stock missing...no big deal. Breaks nice, very clean, has not been shot much. I noticed one on GB or GunsAmer sold for $150 and was thinking to tell them that and see if I can get it for that price. I just wanted to get some opinions from y'all before I jumped. Anyone?
Doc Fill 'Em 67797 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 Does that have the outside hammers? A guy at our club had one, it seemed OK. But unless you are going to shoot Classic Cowboy (and need a shotgun with exposed hammers) the best shotgun for the money is a Baikal. USSG is the company that carries them now, you can get a new one for around $300.
Charlie Whiskers Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 You can get a Baikal fully worked over from Johnny Meadows and they are very smooth when he gets done tweaking them. I have 3 Baikal's..1 that I had done by him and I just sent another one to him to work on.
Tex Jones, SASS 2263 Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I have a Jing An. Paid around $150 a few years ago. Not a great gun as far as fit and finish, but it works ok.
Lone Dog, SASS #20401 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 150 is too much, Just say no. Pure dee junk. That chunk of wood missing is just the start. That's because it is balsa wood. It will only get worse. I had one and only shot featherlites in it. First time out chunks came flying off. ANY other double is a better option no matter how much ye have to pay.
Henry T Harrison Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Not a chance in hell of me owning any gun with that name. You would be better off with a used AMERICAN shotgun
Boothill Bandit, SASS# 48598 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Run away. Run very far away. Fast.
Garrison Joe, SASS #60708 Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 There are some good Chinese built shotguns, the Jing An is not one of them. For external hammers, the Cimarron 1878 (used to be imported as the TTN), is a great shotgun. Some other choices here, but the 1878 is the common one. For internal hammers, low end choices - Baikal or Stoeger. For really good SxS - SKB 100 and 200 and Browning BSS. Most other choices have plenty of things you need to know about shotguns before you can sniff out a good one. Are you wanting to shoot or wanting to learn about old SxS shotguns? You can do both, of course, but unless you are really interested in old shotguns, most folks find it a hard task to learn enough to find the jewels amidst the muck of old pawn shop shotguns. Good luck, GJ
