Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
Interested in learning to cast/paint tin soldiers. Anyone out there do it? Suggestions for sources for equipment, molds, metal? Reading references? Much appreciated. Need a new hobby to occupy my mind, and get away from the media blackness. Apache Hawk 60642
The only place I know to git tin is from a mail order catalog such as Midway, Cabela's or Buffalo Arms. While not as costly as lead, the price is still high. Any other Pards out der know more din me ........chime in.
Cliff Hanger #3720LR
Well I don't agree with the tin is cheaper. Bullet lead is currently $2.79 per pound and tin is $17.49 per pound. To cast soldiers, bullet lead will not fill in all the detail. Linotype ($2.99/pound)will do a better job and pure tin will do very nicely. Roto Metals A search will bring up several mold companies. Buffalo Bill Mathewson, 37826
I saw a you tube video where a bullet caster was using yard sale and flea market pewter cups, dishes, picture frames and the like for the tin alloy. For casting tin soldiers that kind of scrap my work.

Thanks fer the hobby memory jog. I've got all kinds of models to work on, but can't seem to get myself to start on the next one for some reason. Maybe I will find a couple of hours tomorrow to at least get started on the one I have on my table, a 1:48 scale P-51.
Subdeacon Joe
I got a bunch of moulds by Prince August Moulds at a gaming shop that was going out of business. A buck each, a real bargain. I've used pure lead in them. A bit hot for the rubber, and some of the detail doesn't come though, but they were pretty easy to use. The good alloys for it are pretty expensive, or so I think, which is why I used lead.
