"A strong sprinkling of the low white trash clay eaters"
Dantankerous replied to Subdeacon Joe's topic in SASS Wire Saloon
A Yankee is someone either from the Northern states or someone whoβs attitude is found to be offensive and tasteless to a Southern gentleman. Damn Yankees was a rock band from the β80s. π -

Exactly. Many cases it was what you did if you couldnβt do anything else. That does not mean the boys and men who did that work did not take great pride in what they did, and how they did it though. -
It doesn't jump around as much as it just fails to provide a reference date as the stories progress forward in time.

Favorite? 45 Colt Favorite for BP? Well, 44-40 of course! π You asked if 45 Schofield will run through an unmodified '73 in 45 Colt? Don't know about through a '73 but I could run 230 grain 45 Schofield through my unmodified Henry 1860. I'd think I would get the same results in the '73 but never tried.

I was going to argue that as well but did not have the time. Thank you for pointing that out. Cold fingers with an outdoor job this time of year on a small phone and all...π

Why? Just why? And what about the Strange People thread? π

Well... Better cartridge conversions (much more reliable for filming than C&B guns, I am sure) than the ever present Colt SAA and Winchester '92 in a zillion other westerns. π

This one is probably best seen on the big screen. I saw it in an IMAX theater, complete with that awesome IMAX sound. What a show! Part two cannot arrive fast enough! π

Costner is just a small part in this. Enjoyable and well done. Yes, several story lines coming together and some time distance as well. No big deal.

For you Winchester gurus I would like to ask: Main difference between pre '64 and post '64 rifles? Let's keep the topic to 30-30s. Differences between the "original" modern Winchester '94 and the now Japanese made Miroku guns? Thank you in advance for the elucidation.

Once I handled a Gen 5 I got rid of everything else. Partially for the finger grooves and partially for the other upgrades.

Best for what, exactly?

.45 Colt: HOT loads (Ruger SBH Hunters and Marlin)
Dantankerous replied to Widder, SASS #59054's topic in SASS Wire Saloon
Excellent topic here. Thank you Widder for starting it. My small contribution... I played with some 45 Colt "Ruger only" loads recently grabbing load data directly from Lyman 51 and Hornady's latest manual. I used 250 and 300 grain XTPs over charges of 2400. Shot these out of a 4 inch Redhawk and a 5.5 inch Bisley Blackhawk. While I do not have chronograph data, I can say that these things are hot hot hot. The 250s actually had more felt punch in terms of recoil than the 300 grain loads did. Accuracy was very surprising out to fifteen yards. I don't use a rest or a sandbag, but shoot offhand with a two hand hold. If I don't flinch I can get quarter size groups at those distances. Touching off 20 grains of 2400 under a 250 grain XTP from a four inch barrel is fun. π After expending my 45 Colt ammo I moved up to my 480 Ruger SRH and my BFR 500 JRH Bisley. Good Lord, but those things are absolute canons! Must exercise caution when touching these off. -
He shot several years ago at Butterfield if I remember correctly.

Trail Boss or Trailboss Anyone ever take that as a SASS alias? Be a good un!

Fried.

Welcome! I like your alias because i'm one of the only seven people in the country who like that movie. π If you dress like him, you will be one snazzy fellow. Again, welcome and get ready to have a lot of fun.

Never to begrudge someone a revolver project but are you wanting the .454 simply because it's an awesome caliber and very cool and a conversion is a lot of fun? Or do you want to shoot some really hot loads out of that gun? 45 Colt can be quite stout these days with modern loadings. 300 grain and heavier +P loads are available quite a few places. Or you can handload them as there's plenty of information now on those loads. For several years I have been loading some really hot 45 Colt ammo and have had a lot of fun doing so. Stuff that only a Ruger can handle. I love shooting large bore revolvers. And one thing I have noticed is if you're going to shoot hot loads, especially something like the .454 CasulI, I would damn sure only do it with a Ruger Bisley style grip. You did not specify, but i'm assuming yours is a standard plow handle grip. That might hurt with .454. Either way have fun with your project. As previously mentioned, a call to one of the big bore revolver specialists should be in order to answer your questions properly.

Pre lock Smiths sure are good lookin revolvers! Yours doesn't disappoint. The 624 is one of my favorite Smiths. I'm happy with .44 Specials in my Smith 69 although it IS a 44 magnum. I'd stick with Specials in a 624, as Smith intended.
