  1. I was stationed just three or four miles north of Naha near the western beach at a place called Item Pocket, (now known as Machinato) only 20 years after the war. A year later I became a Company Commander in the Machinato-Naha Service Area. Bullet holes, wrecked buildings and infrastructure things, unexploded ordnance, weapons, caches of all manner of things in caves, bodies and parts of bodies, wrecked equipment from both sides and a lot more were still daily finds all over the island and surrounding smaller islands. Swimmers and divers found a lot more all around the shores, up to and including a lot of ships, boats, and planes, both theirs and ours. EOD radio and TV ads telling everyone not to touch anything until it was cleared or destroyed were aired daily....and frequently ignored. It was a dangerous place what with all that, plus typhoons, and other storms, occasional earthquakes, habu snakes, uncharted under-water perils, deadly sea life, strange diseases, drivers not knowing how to drive.... and once in awhile "teddy boys", who didn't bother Americans much but would rob and attack their own people, and American punks who preyed on anyone they could find vulnerable. Throw in some left wing (communist) labor unions who just wanted to shut down the whole place so they could take over, and a few local mobsters and it was quite exciting. We left there in 1968 and I returned for three months in 1975 and a lot had changed. A LOT!
  2. Sorry. but there is no such critter.
  3. Scrutiny and punishment? Yeah, like using my pistol to scatter his guts all over the floor and then taking my time to call the LEOs and paramedics..
  4. Haven't paid attention to it since 1970. That's the year I gave up my own racing "career".
  5. My neighbors gave me a cheese plate for Christmas a few years ago It came with a cutting block and the best cheese cutting knife I've ever seen, It has no markings on it and can't be very expensive (the whole set was about $15.00) and it has a wonderfully always sharp blade with "scoops" on both sides of the blade. If I could find them for sale alone I'd buy a half dozen for my self and bunch for gifts.
  6. Some serious pressure there.
  7. !,000,000+ on that. They aren't all that good and many are downright disrespectful.
  8. I'd beard of this before but never seen it. He did a fantastic job, but the echo took a bit away from it and someone should have shot that jackass than ran behind him at about 1:20.
  9. The town of Prescott Valley has taken the first step of a oprogram by the ttle name. They began with 50 names and ended up with 87. (I was #47)The ones selected have to be residents of Prescott Valley, honorably discharged veteran, and able to provide a phot of themselves. They are honored by having a "roughly' 2' x' 3 1/2' banner made with the picture, name, branch of service and rate /rank. Theses are mounted on light poles all around town hall and some other goverment offices, library. and police station, and a park. I have no idea who submitted my name but I think, if money is available, (and I understand that no public money is used) the program will be continued and expanded. I also think that this a grand and welcome way to honor our vets and have volunteered my help is it is needed. Check it out and see what you think.
  10. 8 years? They should have dragged him out to a handy barb wire fence and shot him dead and left his carcass there for 8 years. Of course hanging and the guillotine still appeal to me, too.
  11. I also have a "Longline Charley" Glackman knife that he made for me shortly before he died. It has one piece elk antler handle and a "Damascus" blade made from an elevator cable. It's pretty and holds an edge like nothing else I own. The sheath was made for me by Steve at Double H in PV with a tooled design by my grandson when he was about ten years old and a nickel concho in the center of the pattern. It's eye-catching, but authentic it ain't
  12. Dog yes, no cats ot prople. Dog yes, no cats nor people. Trinket the Tornado is VERY possessive of her blanket. She won't bite anyone but she can scowl you into a coma.
  13. That looks exactly like mine. The spring went soft within a year and now on'y opens the blade 1/2 the time. I'm looking for one like one that just vanished. It had a 3 1/2" blade and "ear"s like a stilleto. I had them ground away and the stumps polished smooth. I was a great knife and the closest thing I have to it now is a four inch stillleto which is really nice except for one thing" I detest thos slide safeties on stilletos. Don't trust them.
  14. I generally carry four knives with a total of seven blades. I have an old Kershaw with a aluminum scales, a tiny Kershaw that I gave my mother that is good for much but opening letters and cutting off Irish Pendants, and a Hubertus side-lever automatic (Spelled SWITCH BLADE and a real POS) knife...all single blades. I also have a Diamond Edge 383 three blade folder that I found on a baseball diamond on Okinawa in 1966. Actually, I used the original for about 50 years when I broke the blade. I replaced it with a near perfect replacement that I got from Amazon. Same make, model, quality.,even the same pattern on the fake stag scales. It still gets more use than most of my collection of knives put together.
  15. your first four words summarized my feelings about these computerized idiots. I also won't go through the serve yourself lines in stores. " I worked in all kinds of store when I was a "Sir, you can check yourself out over here." NOOOO! I worked in many kinds od store when I was still in school. If I wanted to that now I'sdask for a job application.....but I'd also demand a four hour minimum shift and a the same amount I was earning when I retired (On a good day I could make $450.00 and hour, never less the $180.00. It's nice to run your own business.) and get the same union demanded benefits. I have also "invited" employees who were standing around picking their noses and scratching their butts ro help me. I have "invited" store employees and venders to get the hell out of my way because they were blocking the aisles with their carts, boxes..... not to mention the aisle-blocking displays all over the place.....and bodies while BSing with other drones. Does that offend you? Do you think I'm being unreasonable or that I don't understand? I have been involved in stores, restaurants, services, financial, and educational jobs most of my life. I trained my people well, always put the customers / clients first And I have ruthlessly fired people for not doing their jobs, but I never tolerated issues with unions interfering with what had to be done. I've been fired a few times and I have walked away from some very high-paying jobs. I retired in 2008 and am satisfied with my life...except I miss my wife a lot. REMEMBER THIS: you go into these places to buy something and spend your money. All the rest of these drones and managers are there to take your money at almost any cost except service and pair prices. If you don't spend your money, and if enough people don't spend theirs, then these places will close their doors. If you don't believe that ask Woolworth, May Company, Ben Franklin, Arther Treacher, Boston Back Bay Cafes, Roy Rogers Hamburgers, Arden's Womens' Wear, Wards, Sears, Dog and Suds, Western Auto, ZCMI, Builders Emporium, Fed Mart, Fedco, Fazio's, and a thousand other brands that I, and many of you, grew up with. Ah, crap. I need some coffee and an egg or three.
  16. Had a friend and neighbor who was a Marine in Korea. He worked in ground control writing things backward on a transparent "window" so the crews could read it from the front. He had almost a religious love for Corsairs. After his daughter moved out he had models of Corsairs all over his house. He died about three years ago and I have no idea where those models went. Semper fi Jose and RIP, Marine. I can believe that there are Corsairs in Heaven and Joe helps keep them on target.
  17. Yeah, all other kinds of SUVs as well. Hi1 How are you doing?
  18. 'S cool. I usually only see that many different "patches" on veterans' jackets, or sports cars and mobile travel housing.
  19. 😀 Thanks for the clarifcation.
  20. Big, clumsy, and not suitable for military use. The BAR was better designed for that. The FBI had cars to carry theirs. The Army and Marines had to "muscle-buck" (my dad's phrase) them around.
  21. I had a replica years ago (1980-1981?) but it was stolen. Very similar to the Whitney Navy .36 but with a brass frame. I don't recall the maker but it was a little rough when I got it. I cleaned it up, replaced the nipples and bolt spring. It shot very well and was a real attention-getter at some of our events.
  22. That could explain a lot. Thanks.
  23. 1 and 2 done. Working on number 3 "as we speak". Adding a #4: see my last post above. I had one more already accomplished: I was part of a five man "tontine". (Look it up.) I had forgotten about it until the man who started it in Vietnam in 1978 died and his daughter got in touch with me. She found it in his safety deposit box. We didn't have a "fund" but I ended up with a $450.00 bottle of French wine. Not being a drinker anymore I sold it at a local auction and donated the money to the folks at an Alzheimer's center back in our home town in my Mom's name.
  24. There is a coyote who frequents the VA Medical Center campus in Prescott. I didn't think he was a yodel dog at all the first time I saw him. Almost chubby rather than the lean and scrawny ones I'm used to seeing. He's so smooth-coated that it looks like he's been groomed. He eats well, probably behind one of the kitchens or cafeterias, and just strolls around here and there. I've seen him a few times atop a small "cliff" overlooking the front entrance to the facility, watchhing the cars coming and going. Regal is NOT the first word that comes to mind when talking about coyotes, but it fits this guy. Lots of coyotes a few miles north of here along AZ highway 89 and I've seen a couple over in the Dewey-Humbolt area and we can her then singing some nights. They add a sound to the nights that just cries out "Old West". I like it.
  25. LA had / has bobcats, cougars, bears, coyotes, and other critters in the vicinity of LAX ( within a half mile of thr runway and 40 feet off the highway where the Goodyear blimps are parked) and several other places all the way east to San Bernardino, south as far as San Diego, and in some remote mountain areas northeast. Two women were killed, and one partially eaten, in the foothills just north of Pomona right after we moved up here.
