sassnetguy50
Are guns engraved with a case number when used as evidence or when sold at a seized gun auction or...?
DeaconKC
Quite common unfortunately. We have two very nice S&W revolvers in the shop right now with those numbers.

I worked in an era when that was common - I have been told, not done so much the last couple of decades.

John Barleycorn, SASS #76982
The Barnmaster had several stolen and some were recovered but the idiots did the same thing. For crying out loud remove a grip if you absolutely have to engrave a tracking number. Thankfully evidence custodians can now track an evidence item with a serial number with that number.
Red Gauntlet , SASS 60619
I had a couple revolvers put in evidence over the years and I never saw that. They were just marked with an evidence tag like anything else. (These were civil cases.)
Alpo
The gun shop that I used to live at. They traded three or four used Glocks to the local cops for several guns from evidence. And I bought four of them. A Colt Jr in 25, a early '70s 94 Winchester in 30/30. Remington 1100 in 12 gauge and a Rossi overland, also in 12 gauge. None of the four had any kind of evidence numbers scribed on them.
