Keyser
I am shooting CAS with an eclectic bunch of guns (44 colt, 32-20, 44-40 and 25-20) that I have been using AA 5744 for the powder. I am now out and so is everyone else. I have tried looking for Lovex D060 and Shootersworld Buffalo Rifle as a replacement for AA 5744 with no luck. I have Red Dot, N105, AA1680 and H110 on the shelf. Does anyone have any loads for the above powders? Or, know of something (that can be found) that will work with the above calibers? The 44 colt and 32-30 are pistols only. The 25-20 is rifle only and the 44-40 is for both.
Horace Patootie, SASS #35798
I also use 5744 and am not out, but I only use it for two cartridges which I don't load a lot of. I do load mostly 45 Colt and have always used Winchester Super Target for that for years. Horace

Wild Eagle
I don't shoot any of those calibers, but I know at least one person that is shooting each of them that uses Red Dot. I use 5.0 grains in 45 Colt with a 200 grain bullet. Maybe a little hotter than most people seem to shoot, but well within CAS rules. That would probably be a good starting point for the 44 Colt. The other calibers will probably come in around 3.0 grains. The N105 would be interesting to work up a load with. I don't know anyone using it, but in theory at least, it looks like it should work well for CAS. Personally, I shoot the same ammo in my rifle and pistols, but I know that a lot of people don't like to do that. As noted above, check the loading books and online loading data, and you'll probably find published loads. Red Dot has been around forever it seems, and there is usually at least one Red Dot recipe for about every pistol caliber.
Bison Bud
I don't really have experience with loading any of the cartridges mentioned, but I have used 5744 in my 45/70 loads with good results. Being an extruded/pelleted powder, I would think that it is best suited for larger rifle cartridges, but if you've used it successfully with the smaller cartridges mentioned, I can't argue with the results. In any case, I'd think that the Red Dot you already have should work quite well in all the cartridges mentioned. Good luck and good shooting to all. Marauder SASS #13056
5744 was a great powder that fit where almost no other powder did. Pretty slow for a pistol powder that worked well in larger cases. And a nice quick powder for rifles as has been mentioned. I don't know of an equivalent powder. H4198 MAY be close for burn rate, but not sure if it would work well. If nothing else, give Unique or Universal a try. A little faster powder but very versatile and not as fast as Red Dot.
Griff
Save your 5744 for rifle loads. While I have a goodly supply of Reddot, I've started using TiteGroup for some of my less volumetric pistol loads. Probably the best substitute for 5744 in those cartridges is real BP or one of the quality subs... (I don't hate anyone enough to shoot Pyrodex in their guns... let alone mine)!
