Good for him for going out shooting...

New ejector spring...? Tighten the main spring so that one doesn't get wimpy/lazy working the action...??

😉

That would be my 'guess', but without actually checking those particular items, I just advised him that it would help

if he worked the action a little harder with a quick, brisk functioning of the slide when ejecting empties.

..........Widder

I find that folks lighten the main spring up too much. They think that making the action open easier will pay off. I find that it often leads to short stroking the action...which can lead to a whole lotta shakin'.

I had a 97 manufactured in 1898, Eject on it was weak until I replace the flat ejector spring on the LH side of the receiver with a round wire one.  Someone on the wire used to sell them but I don't remember who.

I made my own using an piece of rifle magazine tube spring left over from one I shortened. Carefully straightened it and then using a finishing nail for a mandrel, I formed the new one. trimmed to length with a Dremel and a cut off wheel. The extra thickness made a world of difference.

Shooters took 25 seconds to accomplish what only took me a little over a minute! I had fun!

All guns minimally inspected and oiled but now deserve a good cleaning. My SA revolvers ran with no hiccups at all this time, not counting the front sights and targets moving around... OK, that's me. The minor mechanical items on them now seem sorted. And I do need to shoot the SAs more often! Muscle memory kept putting me back to a DA revolver grip as I do exercise my "BBQ" model 19 regularly.

My rifle had one hiccup and ended up jacking out a round. Probably due to me. Had a spare round on my rig so good safely executed recovery. First rifle hiccup since getting it.

The 97... I'm not going to blame the gun at this point, I put twice as many rounds through it today as I did just sure it was safe to use. And I had only done a basic clean and oil, it has caked grease in some spots I did not get out. Also the chamber is dirty but I don't think it was a problem. Detailed strip, clean, and inspection coming soon.

I do not know the full history of the two 97s I have, other than they were used for SASS.

I had two goals today. Shoot safe and shoot clean. Nailed the first, but oh  so not clean!

Thinking I need some good "SAAMI spec" 12GA dummy rounds. Recommendations appreciated.

Even if you had them they wouldn't really help. Factory 2 3/4" shotgun shells come is a wide range of lengths. Winchester AAs are ever so slightly shorter than almost every other brand. Even within the same brand you'll see variations in overall length.

It is not uncommon to find factory rounds that exceed SAAMI specifications.

Because 99% of shotgun shooters are not SASS shooters the poor QA isn't a concern as 99.9999% of all factory shotgun ammo will function acceptably in 99.9999% of shotguns.

I shoot an 87. Learned pretty quick that if the head of the shotshell is out of spec I'll have extraction issues. Bought a MEC SuperSizer and started running all factory as well as my reloads through it. This little extra step eliminated all my extraction issues.

Your best bet is to buy a case gage and gage your ammo. Those that pass use for matches. Those that don't save for practice. There are also some tools made especially for SASS that will help fix any shells that are a bit out of SAAMI spec.
