Horace Patootie, SASS #35798
I have a 1886 Winchester in 45-70 made in 1887. I also have a Winchester letter for it. In the description, it has a round barrel. Actually it is an octagon to round barrel. I wonder if that is how they describe it or if the barrel was changed at some point. Also the barrel has a plain flat crown. Is this normal for this type of gun? Thanks for any info. Horace

Tex Jones, SASS 2263
Descriptions on letters are not always accurate. The rifle could have been altered by replacement of the barrel or even by cutting the original down, which a flat crown would suggest. From your minimal description there is no way to know. You could look up the Winchester Collectors group ( winchestrcollector.org ) and pose the question there.
Trailrider #896
I have seen a number of 1886 Winchester rifles with standard length barrels that don't appear to have much, if any, crown. Not sure about the half-round-half-octagon barrel that is on it now. It is entirely possible that it was a round barrel as originally shipped from the factory, and the owner sent it back to have the presently configured barrel instead. Are the marks on the barrel showing Winchester origin?

tacobill
Carbine barrels were crowned but rifle barrels were not, unless the customer requested it on special order. 1
