AT&T hacked - The headline is a bit sensational

Recommended Posts

AT&T says call logs and texts made in 2022 were taken.

From the article:

AT&T says hackers stole records of nearly all cellular customers' calls and texts

The data contains records of calls and texts between approximately May 1 and Oct. 31, 2022, and on Jan. 2, 2023.

That’s about the gist of it unless you want to deal with NBC’s Online Tabloid Circus. Actually, this page is a lot cleaner.

I switched to AT&T in August of ‘92 because Verizon, the former big dog of cellular hasn’t kept up with technology nationwide. Their service sucks in WV and SW PA.

I guess I will stand by for more Indian, Philippino, Ukrainian, Russian,Chinese  dumbassery. Heck since my info has been hacked at one of my old jobs, Anthem Blue Cross and a couple of others I get nearly 50 Spam emails a day.

My credit has been frozen since before Covid. That’s really the only defense we have against this crap. Our government sure as heck isn’t doing anything about it. I have unfrozen it and refrozen it a couple of times. It’s a pain, but in my view, a necessary one.

I have ATT as well but I don’t use my phone to buy anything nor do I have any banking info on my phone. I do all that on my computer which is powered by Spectrum. If they have my texts and phone calls then have fun! 😂

I read that too fast and clicked here thinking it said ATF.  :D

That was the California DOJ.  Then, after an "investigation" by a law firm hired by Bonta, a law firm in which all the partners were heavy contributors to top California Democrats, it was determined that it was purely accidental,

In response to the data exposure, DOJ retained the law firm of Morrison Foerster to lead an independent investigation, with the assistance of FTI, an outside cyber expert. The investigation found that this improper exposure on the Firearms Dashboard, while unacceptable, was unintentional, and due to a number of deficiencies within DOJ including lack of training, expertise, and professional rigor; insufficient documentation, policies, and procedures; and inadequate oversight. The investigation provides the public and DOJ with an overview of the incident, as well as recommendations for the Department to improve its ongoing data security practices.

And everywhere else, too.  I had a run in with them about a year and was charged a ridiculous amount for a   total lack of service for less than a week before I cancelled it.

I finally got an attorney and paid him about three times what Verizon was trying to collect (actually they "sold" it a collection agency).  This attorney is a shooting acquaintance and he billed the collection company.  When they paid him he gave my money back and charged me a breakfast a Gen's Cafe.

It’s not so much banking and purchasing that concern me. It’s just that time and time again more and more hackers or hacker or maybe even spy agencies can make a complex biography of everyone they have enough info on and use this info for nefarious purposes later on.
Imagine finding out that you apparently just moved to Miami. All your mail stops coming. Your utilities are turned off and the new tenants of your house want you out because your home was sold right out from under you. You go to the store and your debit and credit cards won’t work. Your life is no longer your life.

This is just one scenario. There may be others but just this one is scary enough.

A long time ago, the USSR wanted to take down some dissidents. They were organized in cells, none knew who the people in the other cells were. They communicated using payphones. At a certain time on a certain day of the week, a member of one cell would dial another cell (payphone to payphone) to pass any information along.

The Soviets mapped out the calling tree (same time and day every week). Then one day they just showed up at each payphone and arrested whoever it was that just placed the call to the next cell. The entire network of people went poof.

So that is one application of having phone numbers and lists of dialing trees. Today, that information can be used for spam and scam calls. People are more likely to answer a call from someone they know (and likely to be in their address books). This is one possible use of the ATT hacked info even without using search tools to fill in names, addresses, and more.
