'Splody Bolts

Recommended Posts

A view from inside the only surviving Dornier Do 335's cockpit. This aircraft was transported back to the US after the war aboard HMS Reaper. It was studied and then eventually handed over to the Smithsonian's National Air Museum. In the 1970s it was sent for restoration by Dornier in Germany, with many of the staff being employees of the company since the war. During the restoration, they found the explosive bolts that would release the aircraft's tail were still live!

Why explosive bolts for the tail?

So the pilot can bail if needed.

Ahhh, sonhe can’t get hit by it.

I must confess, I didn't know why either so I looked it up.

It could have been a game changer but production and deployment were delayed due to lack of engines.

Interesting aircraft...
