Reviewing others top 25 Westerns of All Time lists

Recommended Posts

So a pop up came in into my news feed earlier today and I me, being well, me I had to take a look.  (Here's the list if you're curious: The best Western movie ever—and see the rest of the top 25, according to critics (msn.com))

So my reason for wanting to start a thread is this question.  When someone compiles their top 25 list does El Dorado and Rio Bravo actually deserve to be separate entries on that list?

I also think there are some movies that I personally don't really call Westerns probably because they are taking place (at least partially) outside of the timeframe SASS itself qualifies.  Don't get me wrong, Giant is a good James Dean film, but I have a hard time considering that as a true western.

Yes, only because Walter Brennan is in one and not the other.

It does make me wonder how they define the Western genre. There are a good number of movies on that list that I wouldn't consider "westerns" as I understand them.

Nearly half of the movies listed are NOT westerns!!

Many that are what might marginally be considered westerns have no business being in a top 25 list!!

I like 10 out of the 25. I don't know if I would say any of the 10 I like were the Best Westerns of all time, but I like 10 out of the 25.

Six of them I've never heard of.

And this leaves nine that I have at least heard of - some of them I've watched but didn't particularly like.

I believe we can call this list nonsense.
