Aerial view of San Francisco without the Golden Gate Bridge probably taken in the 1920s.  Also of note are the sand dunes  that are south of Golden Gate Park.  Angel Island in the distance.

The Avenues used to be fogged in... a local tells me that is a thing of the past.
Perhaps this is from all the methane coming from the sidewalks.

Wow! I'm actually astounded that there hasn't been more substantial overall change.

It's not really surprising.  Most of the area in the photo in the OP had already been built up as residential, so that wouldn't change much.  Golden Gate Park wasn't going to change, and the Presidio and its surrounding land wasn't going to change.  It filled in to the south, and the Bridge Across the Golden Gate was added.
