Captain Bill Burt Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 It’s been a long fun road to travel on, but today we’ve come to the fork every parent faces eventually. Iron Cowboy leaves for college in a few hours. It’s good and I’m proud, but deep down I’m not digging this at all.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 My daughter went to to college clear across the continent and never came back to live in out home. She did very well in her field, being third in her class, came back to California and eventually started her own business which retired from and sold it for seven figures. She is now married and lives in South Carolina, and her mother and I moved to Arizona. I miss her, but she stays in touch with me on a weekly basis and comes to visit a couple of times a year. I'm very proud of my kids and their spice (That's the plural of spouse) and love them all. You'll learn to do the same over time.
Forty Rod SASS 3935 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Incidentally, it is and will continue to be, a long road, but if you are a lucky as I have been it will one hell of a great adventure.
Blackwater 53393 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Good luck to IC and to you too! You’ve brought him this far and now he begins his own journey! You’ve taught him much, but he has much to learn and a big wide world explore and experience! Just wait ‘til he returns with a huge load of laundry and a dozen new stories to tell!
Charlie Harley, #14153 Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 We had to balance our older son’s text messages when he first went to college. He was right here in Knoxville, TN at UT. On the one he we wanted to be there if he ever needed help. On the other, he had a habit of drunk texting at 3:00am to effusive how much he loved us. We worked through it. Yes, it’s bittersweet, but great things await.
Rip Snorter Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Back in the days when the only dorm phones were in the hall, and someone would yell your name when they had answered, Mom would give me a ring every week to ten days my freshman year. I was immersed in experiences entirely new to me and it helped me keep perspective. These days, far easier and private. I would recommend it. We spoke to our kids fairly regularly when they were away at college. They are both successful and speak with us on the phone most weeks.
Pat Riot Posted August 20, 2023 Posted August 20, 2023 Try and be happy for him. This is a very exciting time for him, maybe even stressful, I’m sure. Congratulations to Iron Cowboy
