Hoss Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I’ve come across 12lbs Universal powder. Not a lot of load data for 12 Gauge on the Hogdon website. Anybody use it for CAS 7/8 Oz loads? I usually use RedDot but hate to pass up a bargain!
Edward R S Canby, SASS#59971 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 There is load data for 38 Specials loaded with 125 grain and heavier bullets. If the price was right I'd buy if for those. I figure you would get at least 20,000 loads from the 12-lbs of powder.

About 42K rounds worth. 6-7 years worth!
Larsen E. Pettifogger, SASS #32933 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Universal is too slow for light 7/8 oz loads.
Sam Sackett Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Maybe consider using the Bullseye for the Scottie and the Universal in the cartridges? Sam Sackett
Trailrider #896 Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Universal is no good for anything you or anyone else would use it for. But I would take it off your hands without charging you, as I have been unable to find any, and I do use it for SASS .44-40 and .44 Extra Long Russian loads, and I am getting short!
Rooster Ron Wayne Posted August 1, 2023 Posted August 1, 2023 Universal is just about load for load with Unique. I have always kept it on hand as a back up for when I can't get any Unique. I change nothing about the load and found no different in the shooting. 12g 7/8 load I use a 2.2 lee dipper or a #26 bushing for the MecJr . So Saith The Rooster
Hoss Posted August 2, 2023 Author Posted August 2, 2023 Ok, here’s the skinny. A good friend called me, he had acquired a bunch of reloading components from an estate. He was trying to dispose of it as he did not know anything about it, but knew I was a reloader. He sent me pictures of the jugs. 2 8lb universal & 1 8lb Clays. Plus a bunch of 1 lb jugs of various powders. I was thinking I’d hit a bargain. The 8lb jugs turned out to have shot stored in them, not powder! the 1lb jugs were old. A few were open, some were still sealed but the seals were bulging. I passed on the powder, (suggested he use it for fertilizer) did make a deal on the shot, 1K win SPP, 500 Win 209s. Plus a few misc pieces.
