Old West forms of Idenfification?

What did those folks back in 1873 use for identification? Maybe if they were well to-do they would have a letter of introduction from their bank or lawyer. Other forms might be a business card or letter of introduction from an official. Those fresh off the boat from Europe might have visas or 'papers'. But what about the normal working folks, wonder what they used

My thread, same subject, but England 1890, not American west 1873.

 

That thread may have caused this ponder, though.
