Abilene Slim SASS 81783 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 ..the Battle of Britain was beginning in earnest. Hard to believe 75 years have gone by. I'm in the midst of a great book about the Battle called "Fighter Boys". I've read/seen many accounts, but this one is from the perspective of pilots we've never heard of. Makes it a very readable and personal story.

Trailrider #896 Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 And I was only two years old. - 1-1/2 years at the time! "Never have so many owed so much to so few!" - Winston Churchill He also said on a radio broadcast, "We will fight them on the beeches; we wll fight them in the fields..." But after the broadcast, he was reported to have said, "But I don't know what we will fight them with!" Fortunately, there was Lend-Lease!

Tom Bullweed Posted July 2, 2015 Posted July 2, 2015 Check out Douglas Bader. His wiki file matches what Iread in two books about him. It does leave the story of him being shot down over the Channel and using his cork filled legs as floating devices. There were a number of pilots that matched his statistics and I believe that he was just a sample of so many pilots flying Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mosquitoes.

And radar which the German High Command didn't know about it's capabilities.
Bugs Bonney SASS # 10171 Posted July 4, 2015 Posted July 4, 2015 23 years ago I was in London on September 15, Battle of Britain Day. I stood in front of Westminster as the surviving pilots came out of the Abby and gathered to swap stories and morn the passing of several more of the "Few" It was moving to see and hear them talk about their experiences in the Battle. The "Few" are pretty much all gone I think there is only a couple left and they no longer gather at Westminster.
