Deuce Stevens SASS#55996 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Have a friend that has a Model 12 that he wants to use for Wild Bunch. With 5 in the tube everything works as it should. With six in the tube it double feeds. I will be the one working on this so a simple answer of "take it to a smith" won't work here. I am capable just don't have a lot of experience with M 12's and would like to know where to start for a diagnosis. Thanks for the help.
August West, SASS #45079 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Contour of the front "lip" of the cartridge cutoff. The very tip of the cartridge cutoff may be too far outboard on the rim of the cartridge. Bend in slightly. Contour will still be a long curve, following the diameter of the shell. Just slightly inboard of current location. M12 likes lots of oil, so clean and lubricate too. A tab on the bottom of the bolt holds cartridges in the magazine when the bolt is closed. However, when the gun is cycled, the cartridge cutoff is raised to stop the second (and subsequent) rounds from exiting the magazine. If a second shell is slipping by, it is usually because the tip of the cartridge cutoff is not catching enough of the second cartridge to stop it. The cartridge cutoff is that long lever in the lower, left side of the receiver. It falls out when you remove the trigger group from the gun. The gun can be assembled with the cartridge cutoff slightly out of position. So, be sure it is laying flat (flush) in the receiver and moving easily on its pivot before cramming the trigger group back into the gun. (don't ask me how I know this).

Thanks for the detailed answer.

Goatneck Clem Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 Duece Not to uncommon, August West is right on for the solution to fix his Mod 12
Buffalo Dick, SASS #12880 Posted May 12, 2015 Posted May 12, 2015 I'm no gunsmith but my model 12's work best with quality hulls. Remington STS or Gun Clubs seem to work the best. Also even with good hulls reloads need to be on a press with a properly adjusted collet base sizing die for best results. I had some problems until I got a shotshell gauge and discovered I needed to tighten up the collet adjustment on my MEC 9000. My 12's and 97's run much better now. AA Winchester shells are junk in my experience and I've never tried the discount store bulk packs. I use Gun Clubs almost exclusively.
