Calamity Kris
I was invited to and attended a University graduation ceremony today. One thing that struck me as odd is there was no Pledge of Allegiance to mark the commencement of the ceremony. IIRC, when I graduated from college we did, as well as invocations, prayers etc. None of that happened here. Could the difference be that I attended a small private University while this ceremony was a large State University? When did this change or am I completely out of touch? I kind of understand the no prayers part. It's a state run and funded university so the separation of church and state comes into play. I don't get the no pledge. Most of the graduates were foreign born but I would imagine most of them would be citizens.........
Subdeacon Joe
If respect for tradition is being 'out of touch' then I'm out of touch, too.I suspect that most of the foreign born students are NOT citizens of our Republic, but there is no reason that they couldn't stand silently while others say the pledge or sing our anthem. Calico Mary
Kris, I don't think you're that out of touch. I know that the trend now is to leave out just about anything having to do with America in some of these events, especially ones where there are a lot of foreigners, for fear of "offending" them. But I know a lot of legal immigrants, both ones my husband and I know and the families of some of our kids' friends. We always encouraged Randy and Ellen to make friends with these kids, and I think it did both of them some good. Most of these people want the Pledge said, or the Anthem sung, or the flag displayed! They came here to America because they wanted to be here, if they found America "offensive" they would have stayed where they were at. It's just a small handful that want to find something to gripe about, and the PTB cave in......it's really sad and most of the time makes me absolutely furious! Loophole LaRue, SASS #51438
I attended the Commencement at Framingham State University last week; the oldest public teacher's college in the country. A substantial invocation; the National Anthem; no Pledge. Presentation of colors by Marine Corps Honor Guard. It's hard to read the reasoning behind these decisions, but we had an appeal to God and recognition of the honor of our country. I won't complain. Rye Miles #13621
You're not out of touch Calamity, your just living in a world of PC gone wild!!! I would express my opinion to someone in charge, they need to hear from "normal" folks. We're still out here I think we're all too silent though. Fairshake
The best thing to do is contact the alumni association and question them about the new practice at graduations. They should have all the reasons why this new format. We have several thousand students that graduate every year that end up staying in this country even though their Visa's have expired. The U.S. has allowed this because of the shortage of medical doctors in several areas. I myself have had to request a change in doctors because the Indian doctor assigned my case did not understand nor treat me correctly for my Diabetes.
