Classic Cowboy boots?

I usually shoot either senior duelist or classic cowboy. Actually I prefer classic cowboy as the costume is fun. What I'm having trouble with is finding a new pair of boots. I have some nice Durango boots I wear, but they have the traditional high/narrow heel. Being a man of size having a high heel throws my weight forward and is not comfortable. So I went looking for a pair of flat heeled boots. I can find these readily enough at our local RCC Western store, but the soles of all these boots are treaded to some degree and the ones with smooth soles have other design issues that prohibit my use, things like a very high upper that doesn't work with my fat leg. As the rules state for classic cowboy:

• Boots are required and must be of traditional design with leather or smooth rubber, non-grip enhancing soles.

Why the catagory requires this detail in the soles of your boots sees a bit much, but I'm trying to conform.

Can some pards out there suggest some direction for me? Like a source for these kinds of boots or any other thng I can look at? Thanks Willy Whiskers.

Basically, the classic cowboy guideline is that there should be, when looking at the boots as worn, no sign of visible lugging or "traction enhancing" design of the sole. Packer laceups, when they have smooth soles, also qualify, as well as the traditional cowboy boots.

Fort Western has the Fort Frontier boots that are Classic Cowboy compliant. http://www.fortwestern.com

Several models of Ariat boots have a fairly tall shaft, almost smooth rubber soles, low heels and good cushioned insoles that are comfortable for folks with foot or size problems. Ariat's packer boots have a little higher heel than I like, but they have other lacers that are more like a western work boot with a lower heel.

Good luck, GJ

Would a basic roper fit the bill? I am not sure of all brands, but my old pair of Justin ropers has a leather sole. They can be had plain, and I seem to recall a picture posted somewhere showing a boot from the late 1800s that strongly resembled a roper.

Sure, it's a cowboy boot, it has a "smooth" sole, why not? I've seen fellow CC shooters in ropers.

I switched to CC in late 2008 and had the same question as you. I PMd Pale Wolf to get the "real" answer rather than other peoples opinion. Here is his reply.

Best of '09 to you, too!

Lace-up boots ARE allowed in Classic (e.g. packers/ropers) as long as they don't have lug soles (i.e. "grip enhancing"). They don't have to be perfectly smooooth...pretty much any standard sole will be fine as long as it doesn't have "aggressive" tread.

Unfortunately, I was overruled on the "boot moc" issue.

Moccasins NOT allowed in Classic.

Both moccasins AND "lace ups" outlawed in B-Western.

Hope that helps some,

See ya out on the range,

PWB

I carry a copy of this in my gun cart in case some over zealous posse member gets worked up because I wear lacers or ropers under my chaps or Botas.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Howdy WW,

The following clarifications were announced at the 2010 TG Summit.

They will be included in the 2011 versions of the rules:

Boots are required and must be of traditional design with leather or smooth rubber non-grip enhancing (i.e NO "lugs") soles). Mocassins are not allowed.

SHB (Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl) p.15/ROII p.10

Boots are required and must be of traditional design with fancy stitching or multi-color fancy design with smooth, non-grip enhancing (i.e. NO "lugs") soles. Lace up boots and moccasins are not allowed.

SHB ("B" Western) p.16/ROII p.11

+1 for the Ariat suggestion.

My wife manages a western wear store, so I have had way more different brands of boots in the last few years then I thought I ever would, and the most comfortable by far have been the basic Ariat Cowboy boot (wife says they are called Ariat Heritage Western Boot). They do have the traditional heel, but something about the way they are made, it does not seem like other boots. (Another plus is they don't require break-in time) Just my 2 cents...

Good luck finding something that works for you!

+1 for Ariat Ropers.

I like the Heritage Stockman. They are basically a fancy-er Roper.

They run around $130 bucks. Last a long time.

They don't have a slick leather sole.

It is more a black rubber with little lines. A lot better than a slick sole.

Flat Roper heel.

Got 2 pair.

love them.

And legal in CC.
