The children of four families, in my circle, have taken this step, settling in a number of states and are doing very well.

Three of their children were educated in the USA, two with full ride scholarships.

They have married in the US, are raising families and all are doing well.

Many of their ties, financial and family, tend to run North/South rather than East/West.

 

An error made is thinking the entire country would become the 51st state. It's too large.

Alberta's population alone is around 4.8 million, while Saskatchewan's is about 1.2 million They and Ontario are the largest wealth producers. 

 

Here is the Flag of Alberta: It could be kept without change IMHO.

Visualize Canada as a giant cow standing on Canada.  The cows head is in Alberta and we are feeding her and the cows teets are over Ontario and Quebec and you guys get the milk.

Every year Ottawa robs us of over 20 billion and basically gives it to Quebec. 

We should have pipelines going east and west  but you shut us down so you can buy oil from the middle east. You are destroying us with carbon taxes and crazy laws that I could go on about forever and now it's supposed to be team Canada and you or Ottawa I should say is talking about protecting Ontario/Quebec economic interests by putting a 25 percent export tax on Alberta's 140 billion dollars oil n gas exports to stand up against Trump.  If you guys do this Alberta will be definitely be on fast track to Separation.  

I'm thinking central Canada has no clue about what going on in Alberta. 

We have fired your federal rcmp, started our own pension plan and started our own border security.  We see Ottawa as a bigger threat than a foreign one.

But I bet people thought the same thing when the U.S. bought Alaska and the Louisiana purchase.  We bought the Louisiana territories to expand westward, now some may want to acquire Canada to expand back eastward.    (Remember, I said hilarious)
