I think I'm confused.  "Civilian."  Unless mistaken (possible) most astronauts are NOT in the military these days.  I see no real difference if the astronaut is employed by NASA or employed by SpaceX??  Seems, if you're up there, your just another Astronaut.

Maybe it’s to distinguish from NASA and Space X which is a private company.

Difference might be that pros have trained and been screened, then selected. It’s their job. Civilians just paid for the privileged.
