Chris Crowe
I’m looking for a Gunsmith in the desert southwest who does drop two mods on 1887s. I have an 1887 Chiappa that has been a safe queen for way too long ready for cowboy action. Let me know your thoughts.
Rooster Ron Wayne
Lassiter is the best 87 Man in the game today !
Injun Ryder, SASS #36201L
The mod might disable the ability to load the magazine. That would make it unusable in Wild Bunch. And - It is so much fun to stoke the '87 and let 'er rip! (Also - as you have seen with mine, the '87 is much less prone to mechanical issues than a pump shotgun.) El Sobrante Kid
I don't know if you have been following this thread on the Wire. It has a lot of discussion in general about the value of the Drop 2 modification. Bottom line seems to be that if you are not on the competitive edge, it may not be worth losing the ability to use the magazine. I use an '87 and I prefer NOT to have the modification. Maybe spend a lot of time practicing with an '87 before deciding to get the mod done.
Chris Crowe
Many thanks for the sound advice from all of you. I just read the 1887 thread that you recommended. Good stuff. I didn’t realize the drop 2 mod would disable the magazine. For now I’ll keep dry firing with two rounds in hand until I get it right for Cowboy(and let her stand in for my old Model 12 in Wild bunch). Thanks again. July Smith
This is a good review of the new Cimarron 1887s, but around the 6min and 55sec mark Deuce Stevens does a great break down of some basic techniques for shooting an 1887 that does not have a drop 2 mod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0vxIUvCJYU I usually load two in a similar way to the first method Deuce shows, but I am starting to see more and more stages written with specific language that does allow for 87s and 97s to be stoked on the clock. On stages that allow for stoking and with a little movement between rifle/pistol targets and the shotgun knock downs, I have been practicing stoking two shells, dropping one on the carrier, and inserting one in the chamber. That way once I get to the shotgun stage I can just blaze away! I'm still not as fast this way as I am with loading two shells into a double barrel on the move, but I am getting better and the 87 is the most fun shotgun for SASS.
