Hello!

I recently found a drop 2 carrier for my chiappa 1887 but i noticed the lip gets stuck under the magazine follower (the original 5+2 does not) is this normal or do i need to change the follower/spring as well or should shortening the lip be sufficient? It is amost identical to the original in lenght.

You may want to call Lassiter. He probably knows the Chiappa's better than anyone.  Sorry, just noticed you are in Sweden.  He doesn't usually answer emails, but maybe trying to send a note through his wife's email msbonnie22@aol.com

The OP is in Sweden.

OP-Without pictures, it is hard to say what to do.

I would polish the outside of the follower so it moves easily.

Yep, I noticed that, that's why I gave him Ms Bonnie's email.  Maybe Lassiter would respond because of the location.

Hello again, thank you for the answers 😀

As stated i live in sweden and unfortunately getting chiappa parts is pretty much impossible here, i just got lucky i found this.

And ordering from the usa is, well not to easy from here.

(i got this part at a swap meet)

I can't really show the parts in action at the moment because my trigger spring screw broke when dissasembling 😭

I have tried to remove some material from the lip with an emery cloth but it did not help and i thought it was best to ask here first before breaking anything😅

The pictures shows the flat one fully case hardened is 2drop and the other original.

You can see where the lip gets stuck on the follower.

Is it getting stuck and not going down all the way?  Some of the "load two/drop two" 87s I have handled effectively eliminate the magazine tube and the carrier does not go down all the way be design.

I shoot a Chiappa with the factory drop 2. I also have the regular carrier, bit never installed it.

But to get the drop 2 to work properly - now at 100% I did the following;

Reshaped the follower to make it rounder and eliminate that step. Then polished it with 400 then 800 grit

Rounded the sharp edge on the carrier until it stopped gouging the follower

I also found that the magazine spring force exerted on the carrier affected reliability and the magazine tube needs to be clean.  I think I have a Remington spring in the tube now.

It goes all the way down but jams on the way back up. Removing the tube and/or the follower did not work. The shells went through/fell out the tube then 👎

Alright Thanks!

I will try to find a weaker spring as well as polish the carrier a bit more 🤠

Post up pictures of the follower when you remove it.

The carrier is hanging up on this edge. You need to completely round that off and polish out all the gouges. image.jpeg.d14524ffee4e883cbceaaa86fe823ef9.jpeg

You can see what is gouging the follower. Round those edges until they stop gouging the follower. You don't necessarily need a lighter spring. Spring tension isn't creating the problem. Once you get this corrected you may find the spring is ok.

Find a 87 follower and go back to the original carrier. Then fit the hole in the follower to the tongue on the carrier so it just catches. Then practice how to stuff the shells and not force it farther down.

A stiffer magazine spring helps. Put an empty shell in the top of your tube to compress the spring and make it stronger.

You have the wrong follower. The tongue on the carrier hangs in the hole in the center of the follower for the drop two.

Are you talking about a Chiappa or a Chinese 87?  What you are describing sounds like a Chinese 87.

You are describing a mod to the Chinese clone 87s. The Chiappa drop 2 mod works differently.

AND no hole!

I have several of each of these in my box in the shop. They are not in Sweden and probably won’t be headed there any time soon. Grind parts carefully.

I got these to see if they worked in a Winchester. I got sidetracked by milling a slot in a solid aluminum follower and putting a locator pin that would allow the follower to push forward for the carrier to rise.

Then I realized I wasn’t shooting the thing anyway and put it on the back burner. The 87 is a poor bird gun anyway.

The way parts have been it may stay put forever. I will back out of this…

You are describing a different version/maker of the '87.

The OP's gun is way different. 😉
